Program

Pam flunked pictures today, so she went out and found two of our featured Sertomans together at a social event. Steve Augustinack achieved another level in his Senator's awards and was presented with a plaque today by President Julia Sullivan. He is pictured with Mary Marana who was our speaker today on his left and Laura Beilke on his right. Many thanks to both Gus and Mary who are outstanding contributors to the success of the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club.
Mary Marana gave an excellent well-organized presentation on the Crisis Line. The quote from Edmund Everett Hall was especially appropriate, "I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything bust still can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do." What the Crisis Line does is connect people who need help with those who are qualified to help them. That is is the simple part of their job. They also provide 24-hour hotline services to Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd and Wadena Counties which many times involves helping people share their hurts and fears before they become a crisis and to help those in crisis get help. Mary talked about many of their programs including Bridges of Hope, Crow Wing County Children's Nursery, the Mobile Response Team and the School District Yellow Ribbon Program. Mary is especially proud of the fact that her organization reached their goal of getting the school district program which deals with recognizing signs of suicide established in at least two school districts in each county that the cover. The organization had 2700 calls handled by 55 trained volunteers. Crisis Line is always looking for volunteers who have compassion, are non-judgmental, and who have had personal experiences that make them relate to the callers. The Employee Assistant Program also goes out into the community and makes businesses aware of the resources available through the Crisis Line. Getting confidential help for problems leads to more productive employees. Mary has signs for those who wish to display Crisis Line info on their local bulletin boards.
Thanks Mary Kolkind for taking notes!

Sertoman of the Day
Kathi Nagorski showed her skill as a writer today. Even though she claimed to be a poor public speaker she was very enthusiastic and heart warming as well as interesting. She is a twin who is not related to George but does claim Stan as her father. She was very quick to point out she was only HALF Polish. Kathi joined to give back to the community and since she didn't have dentures yet, she chose the group that prides itself on working hard to serve the community and having fun. She especially enjoyed the Mariucci Fiesta and is looking forward to the Winter Wonderland. Kathi is pictured in a wonderful apron she inherited from her Grandmother on her way to cook for the Fiesta. Kathi works for the Brainerd Dispatch, in fact she did her internship there. She remarked, "We want to be your news and information source through out printed product and our wonderful website." Kathi talked about struggling with the new technology, some of the stories she has been involved with, and about her work as an editor/news producer. Kathi is divorced but is currently in a serious relationship. She enjoys reading, golfing, watching sports, betting on sports, boating, water skiing, etc. She is the Dispatch NFL Fearless Forecaster Champion. She shared an embarrassing my swimsuit didn't stay tied story as her most embarrassing moment. Kathi encouraged us to live, love, laugh and treat every day as a gift. She also left us with Kirby Puckett's quote, "Enjoy today because none of us are promised tomorrow."
Of Note
The new Sertoma volunteer cards have two sides--pick one up if you have been volunteering in the community since we are now keeping track of both Sertoma and community volunteerism.

Joyce Frid sent us a wonderful thank you note. Her mother visited us (it was her birthday) and gave us a personal update. Joyce note read "My Dear Sertoma Friends, It sure is different being on the "needy" side of the spectrum rather than the "giving"side. I never could have made it through all this without the love, prayers and support of so many. It's like God's angels picked me and my family up, held us tight and carried us through these last couple of scary weeks. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. They made a difference. Every little thought, every little prayer counts. The azalea plant you sent me is gorgeous and I think of my Sertoma family every time I look at it. There will be many tears of gratitude as I walk back into my old world with new eyes. God is good, life is good, and we are all blessed. I am proud to be a Sertoman and anxious to get back to serving."

  • Pam is about ready to abandon her photography career. She messed up her pictures at the Rally this weekend too. Go to the Camp Confidence albums to see some outstanding pictures by Tom Krekow of Aaron Thomas Photography. Tom hopped on the back of a motorcycle at the Waterfall and got some great shots as he traveled to their first stop. Many thanks Tom for sharing your talent with the community. Thanks also to Mike Howard for his help at the Rally.
  • Welcome back Kevin Goedker--everyone was very happy that you returned.
  • Mike Boen got a flirting with Anna fine today. There is a couple of fun photos of Anna selling motorcycle tickets at the Bridge on the Camp Confidence Album Site.
  • Mary Marana loves tattling fines.
  • Nanci Williams got a fine just because she has never gotten one before.
  • Congratulations to Darren Larson on his new job and promotion at Lakewood Banks
  • John Raboin was either playing footsie under the table or he has restless leg syndrome.
  • Mark Puschinski is now an undercover policeman at the airport. He didn't say which one though.
