Janet Kurtz bills herself as a "bilingual optimist" and she came
to Sertoma today to promote a scholarship fundraiser. The 5th
Annual Festival Latino will be held on September 29th from 1 to
5 p.m. at the Arboretum. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for
students if you buy your tickets early. The price goes up $2 at
the door and tickets are available at the CLC Info Desk. For
more information you can call 855-8183.
The second part of the program was a report from Chairman of the
Board Steve Mau. It was a well attended Board Meeting with 20
people. Monies have been dispursed from the Sponsorship
Committeee: $1500 for St Francis hearing, $1,000 for a hearing
aide, $2.000 to United Way and $500 for the Crisis Line. Bob
Nibbe will be storing the flags over the winter. The Swinging

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10

| Sertoman of the Day |
Since
I skipped the meeting and I never have time to actually do this
in front of the group, I thought I would take this opportunity
to do my Sertoman of the Day speech.
My name is Pam Sachs and I am a retired English teacher who
spent 32 years teaching English (I can recite the whole poem
"The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe by heart, I have read all the
Shakespeare plays even the boring ones, and most of my students
could identify all the parts of speech, pick apart a sentence
and write a coherent paragraph by the time they graduated). I
also directed 27 plays, kept official score for hundreds of
basketball and football games and wrestling matches, and
produced the school newsletter for several years. I was hired
part time by the Staples World to report the school news but
that came to a screeching halt when the Motley School News
outshone the Staples School News!! I was born in Brainerd, moved
to Ironton as a baby, and when my father wanted to move me to
East Gull Lake I made him buy me a horse. This lead to Monty's
Riding Stable--in my guiding years I used to ride 7 days a week
sometimes as many as 10 hours a day so I have put in as much
time on a horse as any cowboy you will meet today. I still have
four horses. The Motley Staples School is the only district in
the state that paired and unpaired. During the turmoil, I was
bored with teaching so few students in the newly revived Motley
High School (talk about class size being an issue, going from 30
to 3 was culture shock for me), so I taught myself a great deal
about computers. My computer background and my newsletter
background slid me right into my current job as newsletter
editor for both Sertoma and Camp Confidence. Besides Meals on
Wheels which is my other volunteer position, I am the gambling
manager at Ernies and work part time keeping track of the
gambling and selling pulltabs. Jeff Olson wanted me to join
Sertoma for years. In fact, I worked with the Sertomans from the
beginning of Jeff's job at Confidence at the Mariucci Fiesta.
Finally, when I retired I joined because I really wanted to give
something back to the Brainerd community and Sertoma definitely
gives you a sense of being needed. Sertoma has grown in scope
and magnitude tremendously in the last 6 years due to dynamic
leadership from both new and old members. I am proud to be a
Sertoman. My most embarrassing moment occurred at a boys
basketball game. As a graduate of Washington High School and a
member of the band, I knew the Star Spangled Banner by heart and
could play it on my flute. When girls basketball made it
impossible for the band to play at all the home games, I would
stand out in the middle of the floor and play the anthem. One
year they forgot to tell me I was doing it for the first game
against arch rival Verndale. Needless to say--I got half way
through it and forgot where I was. The good thing is I started
over and managed to finish. The bad thing is, if I go to
Verndale right now someone would be bound to recognize me and
say, "Aren't you that woman who can't play the Star Spangled
Banner on her flute very well?" Hydroplaning off the end of the
Gull Dam Road almost into the River runs a close second, but
hundreds of people don't know about that one. The Mariucci photo
by Tom Krekow of Aaron Thomas Photography shows me with Eric
Klinger who has worked two summers at Camp and is a former
student. As Middle School Student Council Advisor, I brought
Eric to Camp for the first time when our school sent several
buses of students to work at Camp at our Make a Difference Day. |

- This is a picture of an octopus. It has eight
testicles.(Kelly age 6)
- Oysters' balls are called pearls. (James age 6)
- If you are surrounded by sea you are an Island. If you
don't have sea All round you, you are incontinent. ( Wayne age

- My uncle goes out in his boat with pots, and comes back with
crabs. (Millie age 6)
- When ships had sails, they used to use the trade winds to
cross the Ocean. Sometimes, when the wind didn't blow, the
sailors would whistle To make the wind come. My brother said

- I like mermaids. They are beautiful, and I like their shiny
