Program
To honor all the people who strive to keep us safe and to remember those lost in the war and the terrorist attack, today's speaker was Army National Guard representative Major Mike Pazdernik. Major Pazdernik served in the active duty Army for five years including deployment in Bosnia. When he returned to Minnesota in 2001, he became the Training Officer of the lst Battalion, 194th Armor and served in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mike spoke to us about important issues with the soldiers who are returning after deployment. He talked about the soldier who spent 18 months in Iraq leaving behind a newborn who was two by the time he returned. The 194th which encompasses guard from all across the state has deployed 600 soldiers in the last four years and most of them will be back in their regular lives by the end of this year. The Minnesota National Guard is leading the nation with its re-integration program which starts when the soldiers are still overseas for both them and their families and follows up at 30/60/90 days. Mike thanked us for our leadership capabilities and encouraged us to continue to make sure the organization maintains its high standards. He remarked, "if you know you are right, stand your ground." The support of people like Sertoman who are striving to improve the communities that the soldiers are returning to is an important thing that helps them realize what they are fighting to preserve. The biggest thing we can do for any deployed soldier is moral support for his/her family at home. One example of this was Camp Noah, a one week program for kids with parents fighting overseas. It was totally staffed by volunteers and had a huge impact on the kids involved.
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes!

Of Note
Welcome back Erika Eigner. She is very encouraged about Peter's progress. Joyce Frid went back to work for a few hours today and plans on being at Sertoma next week. She has received a very good prognosis on the elimination of her cancer problems.
Rumor Corner
  • Sue Slaybaugh has definitely won the biggest baked potato ever served at Bonanza contest--this was a 6 and 1/2 bomb.
  • Nice to see Kevin Donnay at a meeting again. Now if we could get both Kevin Goedker and Kevin Donnay there at the same time we would have a big celebration.
  • Pam was really glad she was taking notes today--she would have been swept up in the mass fining hysteria that was focused on her table.
  • Paul Heinlein will have to pay his hug and run fine next week since he ran before he could be fined.
  • Laura Beilke tried to give away her foreign student to Pam Bye and got fined for that, then she did a little ad to try and find a home with a teenager for her splendid German girl--Clausen thought she was giving away a puppy.
  • Mark Korte got stuck today--he had to do a major rewind of his introduction to give Bonnie Cumberland time to chew.
  • Sue Slaybaugh did some shameless advertising for the Camp Confidence Outdoor Auction which is coming up a week from Saturday and has many great bargains!
  • Gus helped Pam and Mary catch Chuck Brenny trying to sneak in late.
  • It's hard not to get patriotic driving through Brainerd on a significant day when our flags are flying. Rory Coit shared the fact that someone entered a great picture of the flags at the ice tournament at the State Fair.
