Program
Jackie Froemming in her capacity as technical advisor, water resource management and policy, for Crow Wing County visited Sertoma today to share information on rain gardens. A rain garden is a shallow depression filled with flood-tolerant shrubs, flowers and grasses (usually native). It's main function is to collect and filter storm-water runoff helping to keep pollutants such as pet wastes and fertilizer from reaching bodies of water while adding beauty to the landscape. Jackie had some interesting photos that showed what is being done in two Twin Cities areas to deal with run-off. Rain gardens are not ponds and are not good for poorly drained soils. A rule of thumb is to plan your garden 1/3 the area of the impervious structure that creates the run-off. She also handed out Master Gardener brochures from the University of Minnesota.
Thanks Bob Nibbe for taking notes.

Sertoman of the Day
Mary Kolkind from Sears was today's honored Sertoman. She and her husband Steve have been married for 28 years and they have two grown sons. She had a long career with General Mills and a few years ago decided to move to the Brainerd area and purchase the Sears Store. At the Baxter location they sell appliances, lawn and garden equipment, home electronics and tools. Mary remarked, "I have thoroughly enjoyed the business and the community." She joined Sertoma to give back to the community especially programs that benefit youth. Her sponsor is Lori Ukkelberg and Mary decided to tell us a story about Lori's relaxing on the job for an embarrassing moment. Her hobbies include anything outdoors from boating and sailing to hiking and snowshoeing. She likes to quilt, read, cook and spend time with her family.
Of Note
J D Berns sent a thank you note to the Sertomans for his scholarship. He plans on attending Central Lakes College and studying business management.
Rumor Corner
  • Bill started out the sergeants portion with a bad pun on a "fine" day and then he and Bryan Jelinski proceeded to make it NOT a pun. Bob Nibbe was keeping track and gave up at 52. If you didn't get fined today, you should probably hand over your dollar voluntarily next week.
  • Rory Coit has a new hobby, something to do with hot air. (If your first guess was talking you are wrong--he took his first hot air balloon ride last week end.)
  • Any secret chili recipes out there--Joe Schulte and his committee are the inquiring minds that want to know.
  • Dale Bolt failed to hire an accordion player for his son's wedding and had to pay a fine to our accordion player's delight.
  • Congrats on 16 years of marriage Aimee Anderson.
  • We don't know if Les Franz paid a new knee fine or a I am jealous of your Goldwing fine.
  • Welcome back Todd Froemming--due to technical difficulties you had to pay a fine for missing your greeter duties.
  • We learned something shocking from President Mau--he has been getting the business for his ONE flag while the guy handing out the fines has absolutely NONE.
