What fortunate people we are in Brainerd, Minnesota. Heidi Funk,
United Way Director, was at Sertoma to share her personal
experiences with the local attempt to help the Katrina survivors.
United Way became the hub of Hurricane Katrina relief because our
local Red Cross office had relocated to Bemidji and the Salvation
Army was working with Camp Ripley when they were expecting
refugees. Before that plan fell through, 75 tons of clothing had
been collected with cooperation from some local businesses. Lake
Region Storage was involved from the beginning. Then the decision
was made to get these donated items to needy people. Heidi
contacted the religious organizations to find out some local areas
that needed assistance. Through phone calls to the police, she
decided that our 4 truckloads of clothes would go to Longview,
Mississippi. Heidi recruited her family and through the
cooperation of Thompson Concrete, Graphics Packaging, and Grand
Casino Mille Lacs along with donations from individuals, the
clothes were on their way. Heidi remarked, “Every part of this was
an awesome gift.” She thanked everyone who contributed, all the
volunteers who helped organize the clothing, and made us all feel
that we had done something very worthwhile by contributing to this
effort. That feeling was augmented by all the wonderful pictures
in Heidi’s slideshow and by the special thank you from one of the
aldermen of Long View who said, “Thank you God for all the
Minnesota angels that you used to help us in Mississippi.” Take
note of the good looking prize winning Sertoma chili team featured
with Heidi-we won the popular vote category again this year. |
