Brainerd Sertoma Speaker - Joe OpatzCentral Lakes College Interim President Joe Opatz made Sertoma one of his stops in his efforts to become acquainted with the Brainerd Area. Joe is a long time educator from the St. Cloud area who is resigning from his position with the legislature as District 15B representative to serve as president of the college for one year while the search goes on for a permanent replacement for Joe Birmingham.

His speech was rather short, but he did discuss his goals of improving enrollment and expanding programs. He explained, “We need to work on diversity; our programs also need to offer more to people who cannot leave the area to finish their educations.” About 5,000 students attend the Staples and Brainerd campuses and about 230 staff are involved.

A question and answer session followed with some questions that were serious such as what progress is being made in on-line association degree programs. Some questions were shameless promotion of friends; i.e. Mr. Raboin pointing out the excellent religious diversity instructor who also happens to be his friend’s wife. Opatz is very enthusiastic and is extremely well qualified to make things happen at CLC.

Thanks Joyce Anderson for taking notes!!!!

Of Note
Fishing Has No Boundaries - 94 Anglers attended!Fishing Has No Boundaries thanked our organization for our gift of $300 to support their third annual event held at Camp Confidence August 26th-27th. See the picture for the 94 anglers with disabilities who were able to attend the event thanks to the support of Sertomans and the community. Fifty seven boats were on the lake with 150 dedicated volunteers helping out.
Relay for Life sent out a thank you. Did you know that a $500 contribution trains 5 or 6 I can Cope volunteers to teach patients and their families skills to manage symptoms, emotions and finances. $1,000 donations are helpful in financing Hope Lodges. Reach to Recovery can take $2,500 and reach 25 breast cancer patients.
