Sertoma Speakers Cheryl Gelbman & Lisa PaxtonProgram Welcome Center, even the name has a nice ring to it. Today’s guest speakers were from the Chamber of Commerce and they came to make a presentation. Lisa Paxton is CEO of Lakes Area Chambers of Commerce and Cheryl Gelbman is the chairman of the Welcome Center Fund Raising Committee. Cheryl is also a past president of the Chamber (1987-88). This group meets regularly and was instrumental in planning this new facility. This unique opportunity presented itself when the bypass became a reality. The building was designed by architects at Widseth Smith and Nolting to be a warm friendly building that epitomizes all that is wonderful about the Brainerd Lakes Area. It will be built and open by the spring of 2005. Five groups have combined to fund and maintain this project including the Chamber, MNDOT, the State of Minnesota, Crow Wing County and the State Patrol.

The new welcome center will be a multi-functional building with facilities for the Chamber, a rest area, and offices for the Patrol. Focusing on area businesses, jobs, interpretive displays, trails and recreation, culture and arts as well as unique attractions in the area, it will have parking for 150 vehicles. Special features will include a golf putting gWelcome Centerreen, a larger-than-life floor map illustrating the lake region, Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox (new statues), and wireless internet and email available for visitors with laptops. This first-of-its-kind public/private partnership is a model example in Minnesota and will promote economic development. The ladies encouraged individuals and businesses to contribute to their fund raising drive which has presently raised about $250,000 of their $600,000 goal.

Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes. The note takers from now on will be simply whoever volunteers for the day. See Rory before the meeting to pick up the sheet; it is very self explanatory and easy to use. Only 48 or so people have to volunteer once a year to cover this task that makes Pam’s job so much easier.

Sertoman of the Day
Sertoman of The Day - Sandi KleistSandi Kleist was today’s Sertoman of the Day. It was a special day for her since Rory announced that she had accepted the position of chairman of the Membership Committee. She joined Sertoma in January of 2003 sponsored by Mike Howard. She was involved with the Rookie Committee and has helped out with the Flag Project. Sandi is married to Gary and they have three children. Their hobbies include motorcycling, snowmobiling and family activities. Sandi’s lively expression on her face in her photo came about because she was explaining her most embarrassing moment, a Kart Kountry dip in the bumper boat pool. Sandi works for LSS Financial Counseling. They are located by Home Depot and are the largest non profit in Minnesota. She and her family moved to the Brainerd area 5 years ago and she has worked for LSS for 4 ½ years. Her job is to work with people in financial difficulties including those having trouble with credit card debt and mortgage foreclosures. She teachers Home Stretch classes and also does HUD counseling. Appointments are free and can be made for in person assistance or phone-internet help. Sandy was celebrating for another reason today; she launched her twins on their school careers as they headed off to kindergarten.
Of Note:
Tom Rosenberg attended Sertoma today with his chauffeur (Betty) and thanked everyone for their prayers and cards during his recent heart surgery. Steve Mau also took this opportunity to thank everyone for their contacts and support at the death of his grandmother.
Thanks to Jeff Kozitza for stepping up to take over Julia Sullivan’s responsibilities as Pipe and Drape Chairperson. Jeff would like to share this responsibility with someone and is looking for a co-chair.
Kevin Goedker received his past-secretary’s pin at today’s meeting.
Rumor Corner
  • And the wacky job contest goes on. Today John Raboin was a podiatrist and Charley Bartles was a Charitable Rain Dancer. I think Chuck gets the award for creativity this week.
  • Pooch thought Raboin said gynecologist but he admits he is in Sertoma because he is hard of hearing.
  • Dan Holmes earned a new sobriquet this week-“Jack Pine Savage”. Those of us who were not sitting by him wanted Paul Harvey to come along and tell us the rest of the story.
  • Welcome back Julia Sullivan—Julia is staying home to take care of her father and her grandson these days.
  • Quandee Knoblauch is Mike Howard’s favorite Sertoman these days. He explained that she volunteered to be a flag captain twice in a row and she handled her first route by herself with the help of her husband AND her boyfriend. HMMM, hopefully Mike is a bit confused there.
  • Thanks to Milo Johnson who was also among the volunteers at the Rally Up North. Our illustrious web page hosts Ann and Bob Sherman participated in the ride. Altogether it was a very successful fund raiser and the event doubled in size.
