Brainerd Sertoma Club - Northern Lakes SertomaDave Clausen had a chance to become lucky number thirteen. That is the thirteenth member of the Northern Lakes Sertoma Club. The Dog Pound voted him in—Big Mike as a member of the Northern Lakes Club was more than willing to take on another member to help them with their fund raisers. That was the purpose of the visit from the folks in the photograph to the left: Lori Ukkelberg, Cami Haberman, Darren Larson, Raymond Niemann and Mike Boen who distributed the “infamous” Viking books.

They utilized this opportunity to tell us about their organization which was begun under the auspices of Dave Burggraff’s District Governorship of the Great Plains Region. The Northern Lakes group meets the first and third Fridays of the month at the Apine. They raise at least $10,000 annually and this money has been used for playground equipment for Sibley Park in Pequot, the fishing pier on Sibley Lake, classroom amplification systems for the new Eagle View School and many other worthwhile community endeavors.

Their other fundraiser that businesses might be interested in is “The Dancing Man” who can be rented to attract attention to your business on special days. Mike made a plea for references—people we are acquainted with the north who might be interested in joining their club.

Thanks Diane Ulmen for taking notes. The note takers from now on will be simply whoever volunteers for the day. See Rory before the meeting to pick up the sheet; it is very self explanatory and easy to use. Only 48 or so people have to volunteer once a year to cover this task that makes Pam’s job so much easier.

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Patty Hartman.

Sertoman of the Day
We didn’t have an official Sertoman of the Day so Rory took the opportunity to introduce himself to the new members of the club. Rory is the new owner of Quality Graphics. He purchased the business this spring from Bill Mitsch. The business specializes in marketing materials, trade show brochures, and direct mail. He and his wife Crystalie have been married for 10 years. She runs their seasonal business in the Bay Lake Area called “The Wooden Nickle” He has three daughters that are all grown. His life on an 80 acre hobby farm includes llamas and a menagerie to go with them. Rory’s North Dakota farm background shows in the job that brought him to the area—work with the Farm Bureau. His most embarrassing moment involved his mother telling the whole town how he lost his retainer. That brought up the topic of presidential slogans and somehow we learned a little more about Mark Puschinsky also.
Of Note:
Just a note to ask that you all keep Tom Rosenberger and his wife Betty in your prayers. He had heart surgery on Tuesday, August 31st. He is in Abbott N.W. Hospital. The address is 800 E 28th St, Minneapolis, MN 55407. The phone number is 612-863-4111. Ask for Station 10. Tom’s surgery went well and he is expected home this weekend.
A big personal thank-you from Pam to Diane Ulmen, Bonnie Cumberland and Karla Nelson for taking time out from their holiday schedule to help with the Rally Up North. Camp Confidence is especially grateful for this help on a busy weekend.
It’s a Grand Old Flag and we are certainly on the road to making all national holidays much grander in the Brainerd area. However, we cannot continue expanding the flag project if people are not willing to become flag captains. This is an opportunity to donate a couple of hours to a great project. Please volunteer when Rory or Mike asks for help. Seek out those who do volunteer to be captains and help out if you cannot be in charge.
