New Brainerd High School EntryJerry Walseth and our own Kevin Donnay were back for part two of the school expansion project. The specific area they targeted today was the inclusion in the bond issue of remodeling funds for the high school and for Mississippi Horizons. Superintendent Walseth opened the presentation with a witty remark about being concerned about the speaker budget for this group. He went on to lead the group in a rousing cheer that school has started and continued, "We are off to a great start with all those wonderful students and staff filling up the buildings." The good news is the Forestview new construction came in ahead of schedule and ahead of budget so a little over $2 million dollars will be added to the remodeling fund. Also by the end of September, Knollwood will be finished so that people who are interested in viewing the new construction can drive by and stop at a scenic overlook that will include a schematic. Kevin then came on board and with the help of technical assistance from our very own techy and School District Computer Guru Steve Augustinack, presented the plans for remodeling. Mississippi Horizons has to be converted into an area for higher level students. One goal is to provide the 6 teachers at the high school who presently teach from carts due to lack of space with permanent quarters. A big change will concentrate all the world languages taught in 9-12 in this building in a new center that will include a lab, classrooms and workroom. The district offices will leave the building making more space for the four teams of 550 students. Kevin moved on to the high school which will need more locker room space to accommodate the ninth graders. A 10,000 foot warehouse area will be converted into 6,000 feet of classroom space. A new entry is being created to make the building safer. Lots of work is being done in the arts area where studio space is at a premium, the science areas are getting an update and the parking lot has already been expanded by 120 spaces with the resulting collection of fill from down below making a new athletic area. Both Superintendent Walseth and Kevin stressed the fact that this is a huge project because of the logistics involved with working while school is in session. The 19-22 areas targeted for remodeling should cost around 9 million dollars to complete. Making the areas more cost efficient in terms of heating, lighting and air exchange is also on the list. The nice thing about this project is that students from all grade levels are benefiting from these changes. Take a look at the Brainerd High School Freshman Center Floor Plan .

Tammy Webb was very excited to hear from Sertoma International that they intended to feature our club in their next edition. Unfortunately it was just dear old Lars from Mankato with one of his practical jokes.
Jim Potvin got up today and talked about his meeting this evening to plan for next year. He is looking for 4 good men or women to help Pam take notes at meetings. Please say yes if he asks you--we have one of the best newsletters in the country and he would like to have it continue but it isn't fair to expect Pam to take notes, pictures, and write the stories by herself.
Camp Sertoma has a new fund raiser. Tami Webb is the contact person. She is promoting candy machines for high traffic areas. Ten percent of all proceeds will go to Camp Sertoma, so if you have a spot for one of these, see Tami.

Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Patty Hartman.

Sertoman of the Day
Rumor Corner:
  • Congratulations Dave Clausen on winning the new driver at the Chamber Gold Event.
  • Carole Paulson is interested in driving too, she is in the market for a new car.
  • Edie Hindman thanked everyone for a super year as sergeant, she remarked, "Your kindness and patience with a rookie is much appreciated".
  • Jeff Birks and Mark Engstrand got caught in a typical male girl watching situation. Mark, of course, proclaimed his innocence. He did however to admit to starting a betting pool to see whether Edie or Jinny has had more jobs.
  • John Raboin was quite subdued by his loud shirt today. He confessed to being an attorney at introductions for the first time in ages.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
