Program
Brainerd, Minnesota Sertoma ClubSeptember is the month of change for the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club. Tami Webb stepped down as President and passed her gavel on to Jim Potvin who will be in charge of the club's activities for the coming year. The new officers as shown are left to right Rita Johnson, Treasurer; Tami Webb, Chairman of the Board; Jim Potvin, President; Rory Coit, 1st Vice President; Dave Clausen, 2nd Vice President; Joyce Seymour, 3rd Vice President and Kevin Goedker, Secretary.
Pam and Randy Bye inaugurated their beautiful new special events facility with an outstanding dinner which consisted of:
Buchette
Raspberry Vinaigrette Spring Salad w/ edible orchids
Pork Prime Rib
Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Parisian Carrots
Tomato Florentine
Cheese Blintz
Not only was the dinner delicious but it was served beautifully and everyone who attended enjoyed it tremendously. Tami presented many awards included GEM's to Joe Schulte and Hawk Hawkinson and appreciation awards to Pam Sachs, Julia Sullivan and Edie Hindman, Pam thanked her notetakers with a gift including Karla Nelson, Rita Johnson and Sandra Bonde. Mark Puschinsky was a welcome sight in the front of the group as he reminisced about the club's history. His encouraging remarks gave us an insight into the past and a boost for the future when he said, "To get things done you need numbers and don't forget that you need to set your goals high so that you can do whatever you want to do." The evening concluded with champagne toasts to the upcoming year, the outstanding new facility, and the past successes of the club with a special tribute to Jon Haappajoki from Tami.

Gary's Installation Challenge Sertoma leaders: When your Club was formed it was created with high ideals. It was established to promote the purposes of Sertoma and all that it symbolizes; to accelerate active interest in good government; to plan and participate in needed community service activities, to promote patriotism; to help develop friendship and understanding toward people throughout the world; and, to the maximum extent of your ability both personally and as Sertomans to encourage all activities and measures that contribute to a better future for mankind. Never in history has the active participation of informed citizens been so necessary to a way of life, progress, and even our very existence. There is a growing need for vigorous action by people through the teamwork of Sertoma Clubs. We may not always agree as to what is planned and what happens, but we must take part. No one can sit in the grandstand while things are being planned decided and accomplished.

Brainerd, Minnesota SertomaJim Potvin's Inaugural Address: I am proud to have been given this opportunity to lead an organization that I have come to love and in which I find most of my closest friends. Our club has a proud tradition of work and philanthropy, and is one of the few around that is seeing unprecedented growth. With that growth we have found new challenges and responsibilities. I see our primary challenge and responsibility as engaging our members to come together to do what our organizations states in its name-Service to Mankind. This thought isn't a revelation and many before me have struggled with it with mixed success. But many recent events and conversations have solidified in my mind that we need to keep it in the forefront of everything we do and every decision we make. We are the largest Sertoma Club in the world and now we need to find more ways to use what we have. (Jim's speech also talked about his goals for the club which included trying to value each and every member and get them involved, to continue to develop new ways to improve our financial situation and to reinstate the Sertoman of the Day Program)

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. Sertoman of the Day
Of Note: Of Note Congratulations to Rick Besmehn who now proudly wears the title of Grandparent. Hawk and Verna need our prayers this week. Hawk lost a grandparent.
Rumor Corner:
  • Queen Webb presided as speaker today. She forgot her gavel so she passed a crown on to King Potvin at the Induction Ceremony.
  • Mark Engstrand's Quote of the Day, "I may be a sinner but they had fun too!" Topic of discussion his wilder younger days on Gull Lake.
  • Kevin Goedker and Gary Walters had to pull some strings; International lost a member or two in our Gold Honor hunt.
  • Diane Ulmen was fined today because she didn't persuade the two sheriff's who stopped her for speeding on the way to the meeting to come for lunch.
  • Poor Gary is a tv star.
  • Thanks Rory Coit for the great cards with the important Sertoma member's numbers on them.
  • Come to the Crossing Arts Alliance Show and see the Swinging Sertomans perform. Pooch promises to either show his scars on not show them depending on the audience.
  • Ask Jim Potvin how he got elevated to "priceless" at today's meeting.
  • Julia Sullivan will certainly be remembered as the "Butt Floss Lady.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
