SpeakerOur Sertoma team came home from the United Way Chili Cookoff with the Taster's Choice Award. Their Minnesota Chili (no tomatoes, wild rice etc) was voted the best by the crowd. Mike Howard took this opportunity to thank the members of his cooking team: Joe Schulte, Tami Webb, Kristine Welle, Joe Schultes, and Tania Melby. He also acknowledged Little Moran for the pheasants, Paul Gropper for the signs, Camp Confidence for the equipment, and Ginny Haugen fas 829-7761 Becky Hoff for the wild rice. Heidi Funk, director of United Way, joined us this noon to congratulate Mike and all of his helpers on their entry, but more importantly, to thank all of the Sertomans for our $3,000 contribution. Heidi said, "I applaud Sertoma for this huge contribution." She began her remarks with a story from one organization that benefits from our donations, ARC and Special Olympics. It was a story of a race where one special Olypian fell, and the others in the race stopped, went back, picked up their fallen comrade and then ran the rest of the race with arms linked so that they all "won". Heidi felt this was the perfect analogy to explain the United Ways efforts in a community. The linked arms are organizations such as the Baxter Youth Shelter, Timber Bay and Kinship Partners that work so hard with money donated from the community to help abused and needy kids. She made this personal with a very touching anecdote from her experiences as a counselor at Timber Bay. Heidi continued, "United Way is there for all of us when we are really in need." She stressed the fact that this money remained in our community working for us. "Consider linking arms together and giving through United Way to those in need," was the gist fas 829-7761 Ty Eigner of her message. We are all pieces of the United Way puzzle, when we give and become involved in programs to help the less fortunate people in our community we become the linked pieces that show the whole picture, a happier, healthier community for all.

IN MEMORIAM DAWN HILLIN MEMORIAM DAWN HILL
This beautiful graphic is here to help me issue a profound apology to Allen Hall and his family. My failure to check details resulted in an incorrect name for his wife who passed away. The spouses of Sertomans are an integral part of our success and we do need to acknowledge how much their support means. The following is a tribute to Dawn written by a very good friend of hers:

Mrs. Allen (Dawn M.) Hall, 51, died Sept. 10, 2002, of cancer at home. Dawn was the most kind hearted person you could ever meet. She was a very positive and caring individual. She always had a smile for everyone and a way of making you feel very special.

She founded Cherrywood Fabrics, a hand-dyed fabric and quilting business, in 1982. Under her direction and ownership, Cherrywood Fabrics grew from a small home-based operation into a company that sold fabrics internationally. She and Allen have three children (Amy Marohn, Katie Hall, Neal Hall) and one grandchild (Maria Marohn). Dawn felt that her faith in God and her family are what helped her get through a 3 1/2 year battle with cancer. She wanted people to know that she did not die with cancer, she lived with cancer. Dawn felt that she had been very blessed in her life. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

I know there is a special place in heaven for people like Dawn and my own Mom who died at home alone with me at the same age after about the same period of time struggling with this dreaded disease. The courage shown by people like them is unbelievable.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the current photographs or check out the new online directory go to:  http://communities.msn.com/BrainerdNoonSertoma/_whatsnew.msnw
