WHAT CHARITY MEANS TO A SERTOMAN--A PERSONAL ESSAY BY PAM SACHS
The Sertoma meeting was canceled today because so many members
of our club participated in the Chili Cookoff which raises money
for the United Way. This year Mike Howard organized a Sertoma
booth with our very own entry. Thanks to Mike and his faithful
workers pictured for their hard work: Kristine Welle, Joe
Schulte, Tania Melby, and Tami Webb. It was certainly the
classiest booth with our view own Pipe and Drape. It is time for
all of us to seriously consider our commitment to Sertoma and
all that it stands for. Our Service to Mankind has been nothing
short of phenomenal in my few years in the club and for many
years before that. Money has been donated to help the community
in every way possible. We can continue with our support only if
we realize how important it is for the membership to participate
in Pipe and Drape. Everyone has good excuses--"It is always
during work and I can't get away" (many are done after supper or
on Saturday), "I spent too much time away from my family as it
is," (bring them along, it is a great way for kids to learn
about community service), or 'I don't know anyone who does Pipe
and Drape," (what a great way to meet people and come away from
the chance to socialize with a good feeling of a job well done).
fas 829-7761 Kevin Donnay. Mike does all he can to motivate
people, but the true motivation comes from inside. We do so many
great things with the money raised, please sign up and
participate the next time that clipboard is handed to you. Our
club gives a substantial donation every year to the United Way
thanks to Pipe and Drape. |

Another 911 Tribute
Three thousand plus arrive in heaven.
As they pass through the gate,
Thousands more appear in wait.
A bearded man with stovepipe hat
Steps forward saying, "Let's sit, let's chat."
They settle down in seats of clouds
A man named Martin shouts out proud
"I have a dream!" and once he did
The Newcomer said, "Your dream still lives."
Groups of soldiers in blue and gray,
Others in khaki, and green then say,
"We're from Bull Run, Yorktown, the Maine"
The Newcomer said, "You died not in vain."
From a man on crutches one could hear
"The only thing we have to fear..."
The Newcomer said, "We know the rest,
trust us sir, we've passed that test."
"Courage doesn't hide in caves,
You can't bury freedom in a grave,"
The Newcomers had heard this voice before
A distinct Yankee twang from Hyannis port shores.
A silence fell within the mist.
Somehow the Newcomer knew that this
Meant time had come for her to say
What was in the hearts of the 5000+ plus that day.
"Back on Earth, we wrote reports;
Watched our children play in sports;
Worked our gardens; sang our songs;
Went to church; and clipped coupons;
We smiled, we laughed, we cried, we fought.
Unlike you, great we're not"
The tall man in the stovepipe hat
Stood and said, "Don't talk like that!
Look at your country, look and see...
You died for freedom, just like me"
Then, before them all appeared a scene
Of rubbled streets and twisted beams.
Death, destruction, smoke and dust,
And people working just 'cause they must
Hauling ash, lifting stones,
Knee deep in hell, but not alone.
"Look! Black man, White man, Brown man, Yellow man,
Side by side helping their fellow man!"
So, said Martin, as he watched the scene
"Even from nightmares can be born a dream."
Down below, three firemen raised
The colors high into ashen haze.
The soldiers above had seen it before
On Iwo Jima back in '44.
The man on crutches studied everything closely,
Then shared his perceptions on what he saw mostly:
"I see pain, I see tears,
I see sorrow -- but I don't see fear."
"You left behind husbands and wives,
Daughters and sons, and so many lives
are suffering now because of this wrong.
But look very closely. You're not really gone.
All of those people, even those who've never met you
All of their lives, they'll never forget you.
Don't you see what has happened?
Don't you see what you've done?
You've brought them together, together as one.
With that, the man in the stovepipe hat said,
"Take my hand," and from there he led
3000+ heroes, Newcomers to heaven.
On this day, two thousand one, nine eleven

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |

This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
