Reed Campbell's expression says it all. He exemplifies everyone's puzzlement about the lack of a program for today's Sertoma meeting. This was the show casing of a couple of new twists to the old habits of the noon meetings. First of all, Brenda Meech decided to be a different kind of a Sergeant. Of course she is making jokes and fining people for not having their badges or wearing their pins, but she is also putting people on the spot to see how
"alert" they are. Both Reed and Brian Kirkpatrick flunked their little Sergeant's Test related to the banking business and had to ante up their $2. Tami Webb wasn't quick enough on her feet to remember which side her shirts button on, so she paid also. It was all in the spirit of good fun and will make everyone pay attention when Brenda is at the microphone. Gary Walters went on to explain that the new History Committee has decided to not only put information up on a new web page, but also utilize the program area of the meeting to acquaint new and old members alike with some facts about Sertoma. Gary chose to do it in a rather unique way by
"planting" some questions in the audience. We all learned some valuable information including:
- Our budget is about $56,000 a year and we return about $14,000 to the community. For instance we have already donated $2,000 to the United Way and will appropriate about $4,000 for Miracle Ears for the schools.
- It was Bob Sherman's idea (a charter member) to get the club involved in Pipe and Drape
- Some of our recent Gold Coat Presidents include Dave Burggraff, Mike Boen, Randy Phillips.
- FAS 838-5190 Jenny Baker
Gary concluded the meeting with his idea to raise money and new members at the same time. He would like to to do something about his
"vertically challenged" exterior which is at 258 pounds right now. He has pledged to either lose 1 pound for each new member (and keep it off) or pay $10 to the club for each pound he fails to lose. He also challenged the club to think about coming up with new ways to raise money. The Christmas Lights plan was discussed. The Sioux Falls Club makes $60,000 a year but it is a large undertaking.
