Alice Larson, the Director of the St. Joseph's Foundation was today's speaker. The foundation is the arm of the hospital that does funding for numerous community projects. They were established in 1990 and now have 2 1/2 million in assets. As Alice explained,
"The vision of the St. Joseph's Foundation is to make the Brainerd Lakes area a healthier community." Programs include the Community Health Initiative Grants which started four years ago. They have purchased life line machines, supported child protection, and gotten involved in programs to stop sexual abuse.
Her specific reason for talking to us was to encourage us to support Peace Week which is coming up the last week in September. On Thursday, September 28th they will sponsor a symposium called
"Creating Communities of Peace" which is sponsored by the foundation and Crow Wing County Child Protection Team, the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center and Community Asset Builders. Any person or professional who would like to know more about combating violence, cultural diversity and creating communities of peace is encouraged to attend. A short but very informative video ended the presentation.

Sertoman of the Day
|
|
|
Erik Bonde was our Sertoman of the Day. He is a Military Personnel Clerk with the Minnesota National Guard. Erik joined Sertoma this spring and was sponsored by Sandra
Ehrich. Erik was born in Korea but moved to Brainerd at an early age. He graduated from high school here and then attended BCC and the University of Minnesota. He is very proud of his involvement in EMT and First Aide Training. He is a member of many community boards, he does radio announcing, and still has time for hiking, skiing and camping. He is a member of the Camp Confidence Sertoma Club also.

Board meetings will now be changed to the third Tuesday of each month starting in October.
Everyone who went out on the Knotty Bear last Wednesday enjoyed themselves tremendously. The ugly weather of the morning turned into a beautiful clear evening. About 80 people enjoyed the festivities. The initiation of officers was very moving. The group is looking forward to a great year. Milo Johnson received his president's plaque and spent a considerable amount of time thanking his fellow Sertomans. He emphasized the feeling of family and togetherness that our club has fostered over the years. Good job social committee!!!
