We're on the Move to End Alzheimers Memory Walk is
slated for the Lakes area on September 16th. Joyce
Frid presented some facts about the disease. This is
not a normal part of aging because it destroys brain
cells. It is progressive, and is the 6th leading
cause of death in the U.S. There is no cure. Every
70 seconds someone in the country develops
Alzheimer's. This is the only disease that continues
to have a rising percentage of fatalities. More than
5.3 million Americans have this disease. Dale Bolt
presented some personal information about his
experiences with his father. He thanked everyone who
worked with the people who need memory care.
Although Dale's father is still alive, he feels like
he has "lost" him. It is very difficult for his
mother who still has responsibilities to help care
for him even though he is in a rest home. Dale is
very envious and jealous of people who can still
call their parents and talk to them. His mother is
upset with the community because they are alienated.
People are uncomfortable visiting an Alzheimer's
patient. Dale's father's disease progressed slowly
and he did not realize it at first. Dale had many
wonderful things to say about his father before
Alzheimer's and concluded his remarks with "It
doesn't seem fair that a person of his talents and
intelligence should lose his dignity at the end of
his life." Tina Dunlap is in charge of the walk. She
encouraged people to buy a commemorative flag for a
family member who has suffered with Alzheimers. The
event takes place at the Kiwanis walking trail.
Proceeds goes to the Alzheimer's Association and
raises funds for advocacy, education and support.
Registration is a 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10. |

A big thank you was given to everyone who
was on the flag committees this year.
This is one of the volunteer opportunities
that raises substantial funds, is easily
accomplished and is very profitable. A get
together is being planned for flag
volunteers only--sign up next year if you
want to get on this VIP party. Flag
committees need to try and leave the flag
sleeves in the ground--take a hammer with
you! Team Captains can take new white caps
from Lowell if you need them. Thanks to Art
Becker, Milo Johnson, Matt Hannekin, Tim
O'Keefe, Les Franz and JOe Schulte who
helped Lowell with his drilling
responsibilities. |

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.

Of
Note |
Congratulations Bob Nibbe on your promotion at MNDOT.
We received a very picturesque and beautiful thankyou booklet
from the Venture Boy Scount Troop 405. This great group has also
volunteered to help out this year at Winter Wonderland.
Prayers for Cathe Picek and her family, Cathe's mother recently
had a heart attack and is recuperating.
Gary did "diff" right in front of the Lincoln Memorial. He is
meeting with legilators and speaking with groups. He will return
Sunday night. September 16th welcome home Gary at Sertoma and
5-7 at Kinship.

Facebook |
| This is the link to the official Facebook
page for the club. It will now be an interactive
way for members to share pictures and comment on
club activities. As with Walters Wacky
Adventures Page--you can visit it without being
a member of Facebook. Creating a Facebook
account is easy and free. You can limit access
to your page and just communicate with those
people who are really your friends. Signing up
is simple and by creating your "own" page you
give yourself interactive abilities on the
Brainerd Area Sertoma site. You can completely
ignore your personal page if you wish. However,
the profile and information pages may become THE
way for us to update your data base information
in the future. I am also totally available for
phone consultations for people who want me to
walk them through the Facebook site. For
instance--Jeff Fitch has promised me by Monday
you will be able to view his awesome barbecue
pictures. Les Franz also took some photos at the
party and maybe we can get him to join and
upload those!! |

today when Mary was AWOL.
-
The Sertoma Outlaws are now proclaiming themselves ready to rock
