Program

Rory Coit who just finished two very active years as a member of the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club in his positions as President and Chairman of the Board has accepted a new responsibility for the Region as Foundation Trustee.

He spoke today for two reasons. Rory wanted to explain the structure of the Sertoma Foundation to the new members and encourage everyone to contribute. Traditionally our club has felt that the Foundation is important and has paid full foundation dues for all of the members out of our sponsorship funds. This qualifies us as a 100% Club which is true of only about half of the clubs in the Region. This is in addition to the club dues which each club pays.

Rory was here to urge our current Board to continue this practice. He also wanted to encourage individuals and businesses to contribute to the Foundation since it is one in which most of the monies that come in are paid out to the designated programs supported by Sertoma.

These include scholarships for student working in communicative disorders which are the focus of our efforts and scholarships for deaf and hearing impaired students. Community service grants are also a part of the Foundation. Anyone who contributes $100 or more becomes a Foundation Fellow and receives a special pin and recognition at the Foundation Breakfast at the regional convention which will be held in St. Cloud next year. Our Club is also one of the few that have started an endowment fund. Ours is geared toward providing financial support for Camp Sertoma.

Thanks Ian Newkirk for taking notes.

Sertoman of the Day
Sertoman of the Day - Cathe PicekCathe Picek is definitely working in the right field since she seems to be a walking advertisement for the Brainerd Lakes Area. She remarked, "It has been a great pleasure to work at the Chamber of Commerce and meet so many wonderful people in the area."

Cathe and her husband found their dream retirement home on Lake Placid near Deerwood three years ago.

Her most embarrassing moments involved "catching" her husband at a fishing tournament on Mille Lacs and sending him by helicopter to the hospital the morning after their marriage.

Cathe has a very long title at the Chamber but she works in sales and marketing for 1,215 members which keeps her very busy. Her sponsors were Sue Slaybaugh and Nanci Hallam and she had already gotten involved in the rookie party, pipe and drape and the 2008 Convention Committee. She has one grown son Judd and her husband Jerry is the City Manager in New Prague.

Of Note
Welcome - Libby Ann LakeLibby Ann Lake was born on Tuesday at 8 p.m. She weighed 7 lbs. 5 ozs. and was 20 inches long. Proud Grandma Owen paid her happy fine today.
Prayers for Lynn Franz's son today, he has some health issues.
Rumor Corner
  • Father Bill Goers got razzed because of his "collar" today and offered to pay people for hearing their confessions after the meeting if they were "good" ones.
  • Dave Pundt paid a CRS fine today (Can't Remember _ _ _ _)
  • Jamie Arvig got the four dessert fine.
A Note from the Rookies--did you know that?
  1. The average pre-schooler laughs or smiles 400 times a day? Or that the number drops to only 15 times a day by the time people reach age 35?
  2. People smile only 35 percent as much as they think they do?
  3. Laughter releases endorphins, a chemical ten times more powerful the pain relieving drug morphine, into the body with the same exhilarating effect as doing strenuous exercise?
  4. Every time you have a good hearty laugh, you burn up 3 and half calories?
  5. Laughing increases oxygen intake, thereby replenishing and invigorating cells? It also increases the pain threshold, boosts immunity and relieves stress.
