Today
Brainerd residents and those of us who live outside the city
limits learned the details of the November 7th ballot issue which
revolves around the plan to pay for nearly thirty millions dollars
in improvements to the city's wastewater treatment plant which was
built in 1982.
Mayor James Wallin and Business Administrator Don Vogt
presented the details to an interested audience. The project will
start in 2009 and must be done because our current system is set
up to handle 3.6 millions gallons of water a day and is currently
at 3 million. The City Council weighed all the options which
included property taxes, and additions to the sewer bills and
decided to ask the legislature for a twelve year half cent sales
tax. This measure must be approved by the city voters in this
election. Mayor Wallin remarked, "This issue directly affects all
landholders, renters, businessmen and visitors to the Brainerd
area."
The power point presentation by Mr. Vogt made it clear that
this project which is absolutely necessary can be funded with the
sales tax and have the least impact on a citizen's pocket book.
Baxter which will share one third of the cost of the plant since
they are accounting for a third of its use just implemented their
sales tax this fall. If the issue passes, Brainerd's will take
effect in April of 2007.
The issue is a bit misleading on the ballot since it includes a
warning to taxpayers that if the sales tax does not cover the
bill, some increases in property taxes will occur. Estimates for
private individuals sales tax payments for a year range from $50
to about$170. It amounts to ten cents on $20, $1 on $200, or $10
on $2,000. There is also a maximum of $20 on vehicles and big
ticket items such as boats delivered outside Brainerd are exempt. |

Barnes and Mark Korte explaining their committee's proposal to
expand our Pipe and Drape supplies to enable us to cover
our two big local events without renting equipment. This will
involve a $35.000 loan to be repaid principally with the money
saved by not having to rent. Anyone who has input on this move
should contact Kari or plan on attending the Board Meeting
which is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:00 a.m. at TJ's Log Cabin.
Remember every one who attends is a voting member. |

Mankind Award contact Karen Owen. If you have any input on
the Sertoman of the Year Award contact Rory Coit. Both
must be decided by December. |

Congratulations
to Kristine Hoheisel and her husband on the birth of her son
Braden. A note from Kris: " Braden arrived on 10-6-06 at 11:35 AM.
He was 2 weeks early and weighed 9’ 7 and was 22 inches long. He
collapsed his lung during delivery so he was airlifted to St.
Cloud’s neonatal intensive care unit shortly after his birth. That
was very scary but the specialist there said that the lung will
recover on its own in a few days and he will be fine. He is doing
well now and is already home with us." |
