Brainerd Sertoma ClubToday was the day that our own Julia Sullivan and Bill Brekken who are Co-Chairs of the United Way campaign presented information about this well-known and worthy organization. The Brainerd group raised $400,000 last year, which was above their goal. They are currently working hard on estimating the needs of the community which range in the $600,000 level. The group supports 33 different charitable organizations with donations that amount to no more than 1-4 % of their budget. All contributions stay in the area, making a difference in people’s lives everyday. The Crow Wing County United Way is attempting to identify key issues and concerns for the area as well as taking a leadership role in addressing these areas. They see themselves as a neutral organization providing the links between charities and businesses in the area. United Way is trying to work with businesses to help them deal with the more complex issues that face them as they try to decide how to best use their charitable dollars.
Brainerd, Minnesota SertomaJulia spoke on a more personal level. She has been involved in the program for ten years and brings her experience as chair in Iowa to this job. She commented, "My commitment to the United Way is a way of life and a passion for me." She spoke of her personal involvement and then thanked Sertoma for their outstanding support in the past. Her closing statement is significant of the tremendous job that faces the United Way, "Need is phenomenal this year and we all need to dig a little deeper and spread the word "

Sertoman of the Day
Sertoman of the DaySertoman of the Day Tom Rosenberger who is celebrating twenty years of being a Sertoman stepped forward today and was our honored Sertoman of the Day. Tom is a retired educator who spent 29 years serving as an elementary principal in Brainerd with some previous experience in other locations. He has two sons and an adopted daughter and had to admit that his oldest son is 41 years old. Betty just retired last year from her position as an elementary teacher and they just returned from a trip to Rome. They were part of the crowd that saw the Pope celebrate his 25th anniversary and Mother Teresa’s beatification. He serves on the Crow Wing Power Board, is a member of the Merrifield Marathoners, and Camp Sertoma . He is very involved with the Mission in Haiti and many of us have been more than happy to contribute to the Shoes for Haiti fund. A large container with a thousand pairs and an oven for the bakery that is to be established at the mission just was shipped. He concluded his speech with the remark, “I am happy to be a member of the best club in town”. Remember to say yes to being Sertoman of the Day when Jeff Birks asks YOU! Pam is asking George Kohan or Lori Ukkelberg to become Find a Sawbuck winners this week.
Rumors:
  • Congratulations Hawk on being named Builder of the Year for two years in a row—any judge bribing involved there?
  • What is the Paul Harvey rest of the story about Lori Ukkelberg sleeping by the side of the road? And how did John Raboin get involved?
  • Famous Edie Hindman quote, “So many jobs and so little time!”
  • Rory Coit is now known as the “Behind the Scenes Guy” and Tami Webb is moonlight as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
  • Kevin Goedker is busy these days, seems like Goedker Real Estate is merging with Century 21.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
