Quinn Nystrom who is serving from June to Junre as National
Diabetes Youth Spokesperson was our very special guest at
Sertoma this noon. Quinn took us through her whole experience
with diabetes and showed us a warm, funny outgoing young woman
who has progressed from a scared thirteen year old in denial
about her illness and being made fun of by her peers to a person
who is a shining example of courage in the face of a lifetime
illness that at present has no cure. She was very quick to point
out that insulin is not a cure but a life support system.
Seventeen million people with diabetes depend on it. The illness
has been called a national epidemic with predictions of six and
ten percent of the population in the near future. Quinn bases
her turnaround on a place she called Camp Needlepoint, a
weeklong session where she met others. One significant person
was the national spokesperson and Quinn came home with a
mission. Not only did she turn her personal attitude around, she
set about informing the world and actively searching for a cure.
She raised $2,000 in her initial fundraiser while at Mississippi
Horizon and when the Diabetes Walk that her family organizes
every year earned $6.000, the largest amount in Minnesota, she
raised her sights to becoming the national spokesperson. Her
first attempt which involved countless hours and a 22 page
application failed, but she had learned to always look at defeat
as a stepping stone and went on to reapply and be accepted. Her
tour has included trips to the White House when President Bush
was organizing his youth programs. She got a chuckle from the
crowd when she said, "Do you know that there isn't any roses in
the Rose Garden?" This last summer she traveled 20,000 miles
speaking to youth groups mostly at camps similar to the one she
attended. Quinn got the Sertoma crowd to its feet for a standing
ovation with her closing remarks. She said, "Everyone of us can
make a difference. I have become a much stronger, independent,
compassionate person because of this disease. Kids who live with
this every day are heroes". Her hero is her little brother who
got his diagnosis at the early age of five and prays every night
(2150 times so far) that someone will find a cure. The Nystrom
Walk for Diabetes is this Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at the Paul
Bunyan Trail. Fas 829-7761 Milo Johnson. It is not too late to
contribute, Quinn will be collecting money through the end of
October. Contact the Nystroms at 829-1721 or mail a check to
Quinn made out to the American Diabetes Association at 560
Timberlane Drive South, Baxter, MN 56425. Quinn's contact on the
internet is NYA@diabetes.org and she has created a website
showing the details of her experience as Youth Spokesperson at
www.diabetes.org/youthadvocate. |

Swinging Sertoma Update: The band is on the road again.
They have played for mayors, assessors, and World War II veterans
and have several more dates in the near future. |
Pipe and Drape
Sept 29 - Big Pipe and Drape Set Up at Maddens at 8:00 a.m.
Oct 1 - ReSet at Maddens 5:00 p.m.
Oct 3 - Take Down at Maddens 5:00 p.m. |
PIPE AND DRAPE
Mike Howard went to the trouble to bundle together enough sticks
to represent each and every one of the Sertomans in the Noon Club.
He went on to explain that this was now called a fagot and was
practically unbreakable. He complimented the people who showed up
Sunday morning to help with the Set-up at Maddens. He then held up
four measly sticks to show us how many came on Tuesday night for
the reset. He emphasized the fact that Tuesday night alone earned
$1080 for our budge and each member there thus earned $162 an
hour. Pam would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Mike
and members for her problem with the dates on the newsflash email.
This is to announce a new program to encourage more participation
in Pipe and Drape. Each person who attends a set-up or a take-down
will be named on the Pipe and Drape Honor Roll. Every third time
you participate you will be placed on the Honor Roll with a star
beside your name. The person who accumulates the most stars by the
end of the Pipe and Drape Season will be given a very special gift
to be determined by the Board and announced soon. So let's all try
to make our club "unbreakable" by banding together and making pipe
and drape easy for everyone.

The latest clue was no surprise to most Sertomans--"I am
female".
I am generally a quiet person, but after a few beers things
just don't add up.
I am between five two and five eleven
I am married and have a family
I am a junk food junky, my weakness is chocolate-figure that?
"I love heavy metal/rock music, and so does our son"
(There have only been four guesses so far and all
have been wrong.) |

Sertoman of the Day
|
Tania Melby, who is a poised beautiful young woman got up in
front of the Sertomans today and got everyone laughing with her
description of her nervousness and calling it a "senior moment
even though I am not a senior". Tania moved to Brainerd about a
year ago and her husband, Steve, is in the retail business,
selling snowmobiles, atvs, and the like and is in the process of
moving his business from Pine City to Brainerd. Tania has two
lovely children,a boy and a girl who are 12 and 8. Tani operates
her business TOTAL IMAGERY from her home and she is not just a
photographer. With her experiences in modeling, singing and
beauty pageants to back up her fashion photo schooling, her
make-up artist certification, and her creativity, she is able to
offer her clients a wide range of photography experiences. She
is presently decorating her home to provide special backdrops
especially for glamour photography. Lynn Franz is assisting her
and their two rooms that they are working on right now are
Victorian and French in style. Tania is also continuing her
education in the field of photo journalism. Her Life Style
Pictures are done by going to the family instead of them coming
to the studio. That way she is able to capture them doing things
that are part of their family activities such as boating or
snowmobiling. She joined Sertoma to meet new people and has
become a very active member in her short stay with us. Her
husband is also planning on joining when he makes the transition
to Brainerd. |

Rumor Corner |
- Who didn't get fined by Lynn Franz in her capacity as
sergeant for saying "I am not Gary Walters"?
- Which photographic whiz and gorgeous gal almost became part
of the Minnesota Wild Chili and received the "chopper" award?
- Which guy is taking up belly dancing to promote his
campaign?
- What poor Joe has been waiting for ages for an intro to
Tammy and the club but unfortunately Dave Pundt was in charge.
He's been so busy trying out for the part of Annie in the
community play that he is perpetually late to meetings.
- What confidence man survived a grizzly experience recently?
- Heard a few rumors about party costumes. Why was there a
hula skirt floating around the room Wednesday? It is not udderly
impossible that we might see two fully equipped cows. The Queen
and her wenches will be in attendance. Some one has decided to
wear a NONAME costume with tights and black fringe--hopefully it
is Brian Kirkpatrick showing off his legs again.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
