Today's speaker was Sari Legge who discussed IBD which stands for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. She was accompanied by Elaine Norling, who is Minnesota/North Dakota CCFA President. These women stood before the group to give us some valuable information about Crones Disease which is becoming more frequent. Unfortunately, even though it affects many children , it is not a high profile disease and many people are reluctant to talk about it. It is not a new disease and is caused by your immune system attacking your own body usually centering around the last portion of the small intestine.
It symptoms however, affect the whole body including abdominal fever, weight loss, skin rashes, diarrhea, joint pain and general inflammation. It affects children by delaying growth and maturity and all patients are at a higher risk for colon cancer. Basically it destroys the digestive tract and is a medical nightmare because medications try to modify the inflammatory response but each person reacts differently and the same person often has to change medications because the old ones are not effective. Nutritional therapy is important and surgery is only an option in the cases where there is blockage. Of course these patients often have a hard time getting and keeping health insurance or holding down a job. There is no cure and it does not go away. The object of the Crones and Colitis Foundation of America is to break the silence about this disease and to encourage the search for a cure. It also strives to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by the disease. Thank you Sari for an informative presentation.

Sertoman of the Day
|
Another long time Sertoman and familiar face stepped up to the podium this week to be Sertoman of the Day. We are all familiar with Tom Rosenberger who has provided us with an opportunity to become involved in his personal project to provide shoes and education in Haiti. Tom joined the club in 1983 and was the club president in 1989-90, the year the Brainerd Morning Club was formed. He still considers his gold coat to be a special honor. He has held several club positions including washtub bass player with the Swinging Sertomans. Tom spent 34 years in education, 31 as a principal. He, however, is not adverse to saying that he loves retirement. His wife Betty is a familiar face from Sertoma social functions. He has two sons and a daughter, and four grandchildren that he loves to visit. He graduated from St. Cloud State University with three degrees in education. His hobbies include hunting, fishing and volunteering with his church. Thanks Tom for all your involvement with Sertoma.

Linda Johnson's (Milo) mother just passed away recently in
California. Cards and calls would certainly be welcome and in
order. Sertoma extends its sympathies.

Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. This week Brett Smith and Rory Coit COULD HAVE BEEN WINNERS with one little phone call.
FAS 821-1130 Kevin Donnay. FAS 821-1130 Reed Campbell.

Photos Photos Everywhere Whew, over 70 new photos have been
uploaded to the MSN Community Page where your hard working
photographer is now storing photos. This community is for the
club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or
delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for
fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a
good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in
their life. If you wish to view the photographs of the Ditch Pick
(subtitled Dave Clausenıs Bachelor Party and including some
photos from the actual wedding dance) either click on this link or
cut and paste this address in the browser window: http://communities.msn.com/BrainerdNoonSertoma/_whatsnew.msnw
If you are looking for a name to match a face, Pam is also trying
to take current head shots of all Sertoma members and providing an
online directory at the same location.
