Program
Superintendent Jerry Walseth and Gary PhillipsTwo gentlemen stood before Sertoma today and tried to explain the impossible. They were speaking to the audience in English, but much of what they were trying to explain might as well have been in a foreign language.. That foreign language is commonly known as school finances. Superintendent Jerry Walseth and Gary Phillips tried to convey to us a few important facts without clouding our mind with the boggling rules and regulations that make school finance mind boggling. Fact number one is that unless our school district passes a $195 per student operating levy, quality education which has a cultural history in the Brainerd School District will suffer. In general no levy will mean larger class sizes, program reductions, staff reductions and increased fees. On the ballot it is called a tax "increase" but it is that only in a sense that instead of a 61% reduction in property taxes for education on a $100,000 property, it will mean a 53% reduction for the taxpayer. So for a measly $21 per $100,000 value of property you own, you can vote to support the kind of education that the Brainerd School District has consistently produced in the past. But this "measly" sum takes on a lot of value that only someone with a serious background in school finances could understand. If our school district does not have a referendum in place the state cuts off many other monies that support various programs such as the vocational education. In effect, if the taxpayers of Brainerd tell the state of Minnesota that they donıt want to take a little bit of money off their tax reduction in the form of an operating levy, the state of Minnesota decides NOT to give Brainerd back its share of tax monies already collected. This large fund of money is paid for by all and collected from only by those who have a referendum in place. Therefore it is important on November 6th to vote and vote yes for the referendum. The school district is not trying to implement new programs with the levy but to maintain its current quality product.

Notes
Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. For instance this week Deb Kohan needed to call to win her $10. FAS 821-1130 Randy Herrlich.
AwardBrenda Meech is still having lots of fun with her challenges to Sertoma members as Sergeant. There seems to be a ground swelling of movement to bring back David Pundt--gosh Brenda are you being too tough on these guys?
Humor
1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?
The correct answer is: Open the refrigerator, put in giraffe and close the door. This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.

2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?
Wrong Answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the
elephant and close the refrigerator.Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door. This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your actions. FAS 821-1130 Joe Brenny

3. The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend except one. Which animal does not attend?
Correct Answer: The Elephant. The Elephant is in the refrigerator. This tests your memory. OK, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to show your abilities.

4. There is a river you must cross. But it is inhabited by crocodiles. How do you manage it?
Correct Answer: You swim across. All the Crocodiles are attending the Animal Meeting. This tests whether you learn quickly from your mistakes.

According to Andersen Consulting Worldwide, around 90% of the professionals they tested got all questions wrong. But many preschoolers got several correct answers. HMMMM

Photos Photos Everywhere Whew, over 70 new photos have been uploaded to the MSN Community Page where your hard working photographer is now storing photos. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the photographs of the Ditch Pick (subtitled Dave Clausenıs Bachelor Party and including some photos from the actual wedding dance) either click on this link or cut and paste this address in the browser window: http://communities.msn.com/BrainerdNoonSertoma/_whatsnew.msnw If you are looking for a name to match a face, Pam is also trying to take current head shots of all Sertoma members and providing an online directory at the same location.
