October Meeting Minutes & New Member Information

Program
Carole Paulson Our own Carole Paulson was today's speaker , and she presented a topic near and dear to her own heart-getting over the fear of public speaking. As one of those people who were terrified of getting up in front of a group, she struggled in college. As a member of the business community she decided to do something about this problem. Carole started with the Dale Carnegie Course and then joined Toastmasters.

The easiest speech to give according to the Toastmasters is the icebreaker where you talk about yourself. This is exactly the speech that Sertoma asks you to give when you are Sertoman of the Day. Not only is it the easiest speech to give of all, but the outline is provided. Some pointers: know your material, know the room, relax and take deep breaths before you speak, concentrate on message not emotions, don't apologize, and practice-practice-practice.

Carole ended her speech with an appeal to all to take the opportunities offered by Sertoma for speaking, not only as Sertoman of the Day, but also as speaker for the day.

Sertoman of the Day

Marla DeRosier Marla DeRosier has stepped to the forefront of Sertoma in recent weeks because of her involvement in the Rookie Party. We are very grateful to Marla for her work arranging to have the party at her current place of employment, Comfort Suites, where she is general manager. She grew up in Wahpeton, N.D., and came to the Brainerd area for summer employment where she met her husband Pat He is a farmer and they have two children Hunter, who is 6 and Cole, who is 4. Shopping, snowmobiling, pontooning and 4 wheeling are her hobbies. She very definitely said, "I am not a farmer's wife, I am the wife of a farmer with her own career." She joined Sertoma in April of 2000 and her sponsor was Julie Degen. Marla has aspirations to move up the corporate ladder to be Director of Sales and only have to work 30 hours a week.
Note
Lost your pin? Getting fined every meeting? Do you want to keep paying, paying, paying? Not necessary says our Secretary Deb Ryan--just buy a replacement from her for $6.

Hola-Rookie Party Attendees-Casual dress for the party, don't bring your swim suit.  You can still make reservations personally with Marla, and dig out your Margaritaville gear if you want to "spice" up the party.
Congratulations
