Deb Ryan took on a very difficult role in today's Sertoma meeting. Not only was she today's speaker but she had to deal with a topic that was very emotional for
her - pregnancy and infant loss. Using her own experience with her first pregnancy and the loss of her infant son Nicholas, she related the problems that mothers who have stillborn babies or miscarriages face especially in the world of work. She spoke of her steps to recovery and how they were hampered by her employer's attitude. Each year in the United States a staggering one million families experience a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death. She urged everyone to realize that ignoring the event is the worse thing possible. She then presented us with a short video that simply expressed through music and pictures the grief that families feel at these times. She encouraged us to spread the word about the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Center in Wayzata and handed out brochures and newsletters. Thanks for your courageous presentation and we will all try to remember your closing quote Deb, "Do not think you are opening a wound when you speak of someone's loss whether it is a death, divorce or another crisis. That person is already thinking about it 95% of the time. You are just acknowledging their pain and that you care."

Sertoman of the Day
|
|
|
Jim Hanson was our Sertoman of the day. His speech definitely portrayed him as a family who moved here to escape the Cities with his wife, Beth and three
boys- Matthew, Jeffrey and David. He is employed at Lakes Area Kinetico as General Manager. His sponsor was Kathy Christensen and he would like to get more involved in Sertoma and earn his
GEM award. He described himself as kind of an all around garage guy who would like to watch and help his children be successful in life. His most embarrassing moment involved a funny story about his relationship with a
Springer Spaniel named Misty. He was very proud of Jeff's involvement in the Warrior football team which is presently ranked 10th in the state-Go
Warriors! Now is a good time to do something about your water with Jim's
firm - a purchase will get your favorite charity some money if you make it before October 15th.
