Karen
Owen introduced our guest speaker John Bolduc
assisted by Anne Nelson Fisher. She asked for some
respect--some joker in the audience said we didn't
have to worry because we are in Baxter. October is
domestic violence awareness month and this group
along with Karen Owen is speaking to all the service
clubs. In his twenty three years of service John has
seen this topic becoming more and more a serious
part of every community. It affects the entire
country and it is not someone else's problem. The
definition is "A pattern of behaviors designed to
control someone with whom you are in a relationship
including emotional as well as physical abuse." This
is a progressive behavior. One in three women's will
become victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse
in their lifetime. This is a staggering statistic.
The cost in this county alone is estimated at 8.5
million dollars. It includes the cost of police
response, courts, medical care, and social services.
This crosses all levels of society and through
cultural boundaries. Victims are normally women and
they earn less money than other women because of
their violent home life. It causes transient
employees who cannot stay very long at one job. The
leading cause of death for women in the workplace is
homicide--and this is directly related to domestic
violence spilling into the workplace. Law
enforcement views these calls as the most dangerous
of all their efforts due to their unpredictability.
Victims are usually assaulted three times on average
before they seek intervention. Neighbors often
ignore this because they feel it is an invasion of
privacy.
Anne presented some ideas about what we can do. One
of the biggest things is to become informed. Learn
about the local groups that are out there to deal
with this. Their website is
www.mcbw.org and the Crisis Line is also a good
resource. The web includes suggestions for employers
who have questions about how to help a victim. This
issue should be covered in the local churches.
Modeling proper behavior is always important as
coaches, youth leaders, and parents. Everyone needs
to be aware of how extensive a problem this has
become.

Schedule |
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there. |

Of
Note |
Tom Rosenberger thanked everyone for their prayers and thoughts
during his recent heart surgery. We are praying that Buford
Johnson (Diane Rook Johnson's husband) who is in the Cities and
doing well after getting a heart stent.
Thanks to all who put in about 96 hours testing approximately
500 fifth graders at Forest view on Monday and Tuesday October
5th and 6th.
Congratulations
to Carol Winegar who won an orange energized shirt today!! Bring
in those new members and mentor them.
We are receiving so many thank you notes these days that we have
decided to move them to FACEBOOK. You can read these in full on
the Discussion Tab. We will no longer be sharing them at
meetings or on the regular newsletter. REMEMBER you can view our
Facebook page anytime without joining. See details below. |
|
|
|
Facebook |
| This is the link to the official Facebook
page for the club. It will now be an interactive
way for members to share pictures and comment on
club activities. As with Walters Wacky
Adventures Page--you can visit it without being
a member of Facebook. Creating a Facebook
account is easy and free. You can limit access
to your page and just communicate with those
people who are really your friends. Signing up
is simple and by creating your "own" page you
give yourself interactive abilities on the
Brainerd Area Sertoma site. You can completely
ignore your personal page if you wish. However,
the profile and information pages may become THE
way for us to update your data base information
in the future. I am also totally available for
phone consultations for people who want me to
walk them through the Facebook site. For
instance--Jeff Fitch has promised me by Monday
you will be able to view his awesome barbecue
pictures. Les Franz also took some photos at the
party and maybe we can get him to join and
upload those!! |
