"Vote
Young. Vote Forever." This is the motto of Kids
VotingUSA which has a local chapter headed by
Theresa Goble who is also the finance director for
the City of Brainerd. The local chapter was started
in 1996 under the auspices of then Mayor, Bonnie
Cumberland. Since this program stresses the
educational component followed by the actual kids
voting at the polls experience, it was an easy thing
for Bonnie to support. Its goals include to engage
kids in the political process and to establish a
life-long commitment to informed voting as an adult.
Local studies have shown that voting increased
fourteen percent among the kids who participated in
the program and have since become voting citizens.
The national program originated in Arizona when a
group of vacationing businessmen were impressed with
the voting turnout in Costa Rica where children are
always brought to the polls. Minnesota Links is
sponsoring the program this year and 7,000 students
in the area will participate. Overall 250,000 take
part in Minnesota alone. The group raises about
$4,000 every two years to support the program and
promotes 150 volunteers to man the polling sites and
provide the kids with ballots. The ballots
themselves have pictures of the candidates, are
shortened to leave out the uncontested races and
judgeships, and contain two issue questions to help
promote classroom learning. This year the questions
are (K-6) "Should people be required to recycle
their garbage?" and (7-12) "Should the voting age be
lowered to 17?" The classroom material is online and
readily available for teachers to use. Theresa
enjoyed her visit to Sertoma and remarked on what
a"fun" group we were. For more information go to

Winter Wonderland
- Work is starting. The trucks will be
sorted and the new arrivals will be
delivered by the time the newsletter is
published. Many hands are needed
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next
week. There is a four page guide
available for workers that shows where
the displays need to be set up. See
Steve Mau to get involved with the hard
work.
- Lori Rubin is working on sales. She
is looking for help to contact all
current sponsors to check their info in
the publication. Also new sponsors are
needed since many of the displays were
paid for by Sertoma last year. Call Lori
at CTC to let her know you can help.
- Online sign up will be up and
running soon. Anyone who knows that they
can volunteer was given the opportunity
to sign up today. Joe Schulte and Ann
Sherman will again be coordinating this
effort.
- See David Allen Pundt if you know of
a group that would like to entertain for
an hour or so at WW. He is also looking
for Santa volunteers.

Schedule |
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there. |

Nisswa
Mayor Brian Lehman was today's honored Sertoman and he took full
advantage of it. He answered his cell phone, listed every single
one of his jobs during introductions, and generally made a
nuisance of himself. He also shamelessly promoted his candidacy
(he is running unopposed). This however does show us why Brian
joined this organization. He belongs to another "stuffy" service
club. Brian called Brainerd Noon Sertoma a "healthy" club,
mainly because people who laugh often live longer and we
certainly enjoy our laughs at Sertoma. Brian originally comes
from Pennsylvania and lived in Oklahoma. He married a Minnesota
girl 22 years ago and she brought him here in 1999. They have
four children ranging from a fourth grader to a college
freshman. Brian loves baseball and collects stamps and antique
postcards. He is very involved with the Salvation Army,
coordinating efforts at bell ringing every year. He has a
private consulting firm, but is mainly involved in publishing.
His work at Lake Country Journal involves client services had
business management. This publishing company produces the
Journal, the Initiative Quarterly, and the new Visitors Guide.
Brian joined Sertoma in 2001 and was sponsored by Paul Gropper.
His most embarrassing moment involved sitting between Vernonica
Jensen and Pam Sachs trying to sell Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing
Tickets to a "porno" star. |

Anna Gorecky will no longer be with Snap Fitness. She is
taking a "new" job which will involve spending 4 months
in New York City working with a catering group that does
movie shoots and television programs. She plans on
coming back to Brainerd and making a major career change
in the process. Thanks for all you have done for the
group and we will definitely miss our Anna!!! More on

Rumor Corner
|
-
ood thing we didn't have any young visitors today. Sergeant
Brian did his game show host imitation. His show was called
slutty, fat or drunk and he actually called on Sertomans to put
themselves into a category. If he agreed, they didn't get fined.
Joe Schulte and Gus were the only "lucky" contestants. Sheriff
Dahl, Carol Winegar, Laura Beilke, Dave Clausen and Brian
Lehman, Randy Phillips and Todd Dunlap all flunked. It was truly
hilarious and everyone was a good sport!
-
Heidi Funk paid a happy fine-she is engaged.
-
Matt Davis got in trouble for not giving Bill Goers a ride to
Sertoma.
-
Todd Dahl got compliments on his "Halloween" costume--hmm I
think the County pays big bucks for that outfit.
-
Rumor has it that Vern is drinking milk for a reason. Heidi is
vociferously claiming she doesn't need to drink milk and is not
getting engaged because of anything to do with milk.
-
Tami Webb was making confetti today and enjoying every minute of
it. Inquiring minds want to know if she shouldn't have used her
paper shredder instead.
-
George Moore mistook his chicken bone for the traveling
microphone.
