Program
Both of our district representatives combined their presentations today. The Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club is home to the District Governor and the District Foundation Representative. Karen Owen and Laura Beilke discussed their respective jobs. Laura complimented Rory Coit on his excellent efforts to educate everyone about the importantce of the Foundation. It is through our 100% contribution as a club (funded through the general fund by the Board's approval) that we are eligible for matching funds for programs such as the recently introduced SafeEars. The Foundation also gives away $80,000 in Scholarships yearly to deaf and hard of hearing students and to those who going into careers associated with the field. Laura encouraged everyone to consider becoming a "fellow" by contributing $100. She also talked about the wonderful opportunity she had to tour the Faribault School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Sertoma Foundation donates funds that promote technology for efforts such as the school and Camp Sertoma. Karen Owen expressed her pleasure at being involved in such a great Sertoma club. Her travels around the district have reinforced her enthusiasm for the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club. Our spirit of work and camaraderie as well as our efforts to get new members involved in our projects are the keys to the success of the Club. Karen discussed the concern of the Sertoma national organization in maintaining membership. She also explained that one of their major goals and hers is to spread the good word about Sertoma. The more people who are aware of the good works done by Sertoma Clubs, the more members will be recruited. Marketing is the second M on her list. Maintaining the mission of Sertoma is the third branch. Karen concluded her remarks with an affirmation, "I am proud of you as a club and of each of you as members!"
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes.

Sertoman of the Day

Jeff Fitch was brought into Sertoma by Mary Marana and he jumped into the organization with both feet. He immediately got involved in the Rookie Party Planning, flags, pipe and drape and set up for Winter Wonderland. His team won the Jaycees Barbecue. Jeff is Co-Chairman of the new SafeEars program. Jeff was very involved in the planning and work involved in Great in 08. Mid State Refrigeration is a family owned business that employs about 175 people in a seven state area. He is director of operations and has been back in the Brainerd area for five years. He spent some time in Alaska where he even got involved with sled dogs and mushing. His major hobby is shooting competitively. He is also a hunter (his picture reflects the opportunity he missed to hunt in South Dakota to fulfill his duties as Sertoman of the day). Jeff and his wife are the proud parents of a new baby. They have been married for 16 years and consider the new addition to their family a miracle. Thanks Jeff for all you do as a Sertoman; you are definitely meeting your goals of helping children. He was threatening to demonstrate texting as part of his speech since he couldn't be fined for it--Jeff definitely helps with promoting fun at Sertoma. His most embarrassing moment involved a well dressed lady and a beer bath she didn't expect.

Of Note
Welcome back Bruce Heilman who has rejoined Sertoma.

The United Way sent us a thank you for our participation in the Chili Cookoff and a picture of our "jailbirds".

The Brainerd Dispatch thanked us for our part in spreading the word about "Think Pink".

Business Notes
Tami Webb returned to Sertoma with her new business WebbWay Enterprises. Julia Sulllivan is very established in Omaha with 9 stores to manage. John has gotten a good new job and they are settled in their new house.

Rent the Dancing Man--Paul Heinlein shared the new contracts which double as advertising flyers for our Dancing Man.

Rumor Corner
  • The Committee to Stop World Flatulence was founded today by Charlie Bartels (he recommends starting with the political ads)
  • The Dog Pound had a special treat for Uncle Art today- his very own napkin presidential award for perpetual greeting.
  • Happy Birthday Mary Marana and Anita Traveca.
  • The Rookies are huddling up in the puppy pool--they even had reservations today!
  • Things got worse and worse in the click on email joke lines today--we went from naked pictures of Palin to naked pictures of Clinton, to naked pictures of DAP. Just don't open any of them to be safe.
  • Happy fines today were paid in gratitude that the right person from Wacky Adventures was wearing spandex. Do Part A and Part B go together? Is it Gary Walters in the shirt? Is it John Raboin in the spandex shorts? Inquiring minds want to know.
  • Matt Davis is forming a racing league--just hook your big garbage can up to the back of your truck, forget to drop it off at the end of the driveway and meet him on the highway. He thinks the current record is 65 miles per hour.
  • It took Anna three days to figure out the ESP joke last week. She got an opportunity to speak up and to fine anyone she wanted--of course she wanted to fine Brian who originated the joke but he wasn't around. John Raboin got fined for bragging about what was in his shorts.
  • Our local standup comedian (Bill Goers) got a big laugh with his question for our Sertoman of the Day about shooting blanks (Jeff shoots thousands of rounds a year but it took him sixteen years to get pregnant?)
