Program
Two equally good causes were represented in today's program. Kathi Nagorski brought Kelly Simons who is the President of the local chapter of the Susan B Koman Foundation and her co-worker Monica Nieman who are promoting "Think Pink". The Race for the Cure raised $84,000 locally this year and most of that money is returned to the community for projects relating to breast cancer. "Think Pink' is an awareness effort that has already provided about one hundred free mammogram appointments to women who cannot afford screening. Tuesday, October 14th is "Pink Day" where everyone is encouraged wear pink, businesses are encouraged to display the free signs distributed by the Dispatch, and anyone who donates $5 or more to the Koman Foundation will be listed in the Brainerd Dispatch as well as receiving a pink ribbon. Paint the town pink day is actually Friday. Any efforts that can be made to display the signature color that day will be much appreciated. One in 7 women and one in 25 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The early detection is the major factor in survival so monthly self exams and yearly mammogram are key. Kathi who has had some very personal experiences with this disease is going to publish stories sent in by survivors and those who have been close to victims of this dreaded disease. Kelly herself is a breast cancer survivor.

Head Start has been around for many years, but the program continues because of the impact it has on children from poorer families. This pre-school program works with the community schools and provides a variety of comprehensive programs to prepare kids for school. These include nutrition, community awareness, literacy, and family involvement. Jane Hoskins spoke to us about the need for volunteers from the community and businesses to work with the Early Literacy Project which is part of Ameri-Corps. For instance, Tad who is a Sertoma member is planning a family night that will involve some fun construction projects. Volunteers who work in the classroom are trained and mentored. Jane works in three counties-Morrison, Todd and Crow Wing serving a total of 379 on site students and 96 children too young to attend classes who get home services. The Brainerd site has 102 children who attend from Monday through Thursday.
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes.

Rumor Corner
  • The dog pound got some applause lessons from the president today.
  • Dave Clausen took some time out from his rather overwhelming job today in time to get fined by Brian who also picked on Bryan Barrer.
  • Pam Bye does a mean Mary Marana imitation. I wonder if she also has a thing for Elvis? Mary got fined for her involvement with the King of Rock and Roll.
  • Jeff Fitch found out the President of Sertoma likes to keep people from sneaking text messages in the middle of the meeting.
  • DAP (Pundt Pundit) Happy Gas Tax Increase
  • Andi Holmes does such beautiful creative work as chaplain that Brian had to fine her for being just TOO good.
  • Brian Lehman paid a happy fine. Either he is a wonderful Mayor of Nisswa or no one else wants the job.
  • We don't know if Anna Gorecky really confused ESP with ESPN but Brian's joke about who was going to win the election went over big at her expense.
  • Missy Lake and Dave Clausen got involved in a hummer fine.
