Program
Today Steve Sviggum, Speaker of the House of Representatives, was in Brainerd at Central Lakes College sitting in on a political science class during the morning and graciously agreed to speak to our group at noon.  Steve spoke on his background as a farmer, teachers, and political history.  He then spoke on the importance and fulfillment of community service.  He explained how Minnesota’s legislature is operating as a balanced unit with a Democratic Senate, Republican House, and a third party Governor.  He encouraged everyone to balance their lives in a similar manner.  He would like government to positively affect people and their lives.  He spoke of the next legislative session and what issues would be addressed: 1) a further tax cut, 2) rural Minnesota agriculture initiatives, 3) investing the surplus on Minnesota roads and bridges.

The Gem Hunt is soon ending and we are down six members and need 10 additional new members to achieve our needed membership level by December 1, 1999.  This seems like an unrealistic goal, but it’s been agreed that in tribute to Jon Haapajoki’s passing we can do it!!!  If everyone asked a person they’ve been thinking about bringing to lunch, we’d have no problem reaching our goal.  To take it even a step further, if you bring someone to lunch between now and December 1, 1999, and if they sign up for membership before the deadline, as their sponsor you will receive a $25.00 gift certificate.

Brainerd Area Sertoma will be selling raffle tickets for $20.00 each with the opportunity to win back $40.00!  More information to follow.

Sertoman of the Day
Julie Degen was our Sertoman of the Day.  Julie and her husband, Mike. have two daughters -- Jenna, 2˝, and Hanna, 8 months.  Has been in the hospitality business from Lake Kabagoma to Tahoe to Brainerd.  Coached basketball and volleyball at Pillager while a recreation director at Maddens.  Julie’s hobbies include family, friends, snowmobiling, all sports, time at the cabin, riding Harley with husband Mike.  Her most embarrassing moment occurred while she was working at Maddens.  Bob Sherman caught her dancing on the stage in Town Hall in the middle of a “hectic” turnover.  Her dream for the future is to have a  happy, healthy, prosperous life with her family and ride her own Harley to Sturgis, South Dakota.  She joined Sertoma in July 1998 and was sponsored by Becky Butcher.  She was Rookie Party co-chair.
