Bob Swanger from the West Side St. Cloud Sertoma Club spoke to our group today. Bob is the district representative of the Sertoma Foundation. He began his speech by explaining that the foundation is
"the fiscal agent to strengthen the Sertoma organization nationally and
internationally". They raise money two ways. Each Sertoma club pays a fee to the foundation and then is encouraged to continue to contribute and become what is called a 100% club. This means that for each member of the club, $20 is given to the Foundation each year. The second way of adding to the foundation funds is through special endowments. Our club has been very active in both areas. We are a 100% club and we have been active in past endowment efforts as well as spearheading the Haappajoki Memorial Fund. Bob continued,
"This club has always had a leadership role in the district."
Money contributed to the Foundation goes back to individual clubs as community service matching grants. The Brainerd Noon Club along with 4 other clubs including Bob's applied for and received a grant this year for Camp Sertoma. The Foundation distributes $900,000 nationwide every year.
Bob ended his speech with a few special items. He managed to acquire three new Foundation Fellows from the members attending.. For the nominal fee of $100, these people are named Foundation Fellows. Bob's personal goal of having 5% of the district membership enrolled is very close to being realized. He then invited us all to a Sertoma Night Mighty Gulls-Riverbats game in St. Cloud. The opportunity for exchanging fellowship with the St. Cloud area clubs through this event has not been utilized as much as it could be. So if you are not busy June 27th, get a car pool together, buy a ticket for $4.50 and join the fun.
