Keith Moilanen - voice of North Central Motor SpeedwayKeith Moilanen, the voice of the North Central Motor Speedway, was our refreshing change of pace speaker today. Keith brought two of the regular drivers, Gary Waton and Mark Smorong, along as well as a race car. Keith has been involved in racing since the 50's where stock racing took place on the oval dirt Nisswa Speedway. The North Central facility was built in 1960, sold to its current owners in 1989, and has seen many improvements in the last few years. Keith explained, "North Central Motor Speedway is as good a race track with as good a programs any in Minnesota." He extolled the state of the art concession stand, explained the track was fully insured., and talked about their new tech and tower facilities. His connections to Sertoma include Deb Ryan whose brother and father are both racers and Milo Johnson who sponsors races for Auto Value. North Central Motor SpeedwayKeith explained that the track now follows the Wasota format. Wasota is an organization that includes 60 area dirt tracks just like the one where important NASCAR drivers like Jeff Gordon got their start. An interesting fact centers around the origin of NASCAR racing itself--it all started when the moonshiners would get together on Sundays to race their souped-up cars that they used to transport their products. One hundred sixteen cars competed last week--an all time record. The classes are now : 4 Cylinder Modified, Street Stock, Super Stocks, Wasota Modified, and Wasota Pure Stock.North Central gives away $40,000 in prize money every race. Their drivers are consistently in the top 25 division races for Wasota which covers several states. He invited us especially to come next Tuesday for the mid-week Best of Wasota Race, which is a traveling race that goes from track to track all summer.
