| An Educator's Tour Of Forest
View Middle School |
|
About 75 people from Sertoma gathered in the
Forest View Middle School
cafetorium (a beautiful multifunctional
room that will house students for lunch and provide a place for
student and community programs) to be welcomed by Superintendent
Jerry Walseth and then given a tour of the building which is
scheduled for students after the Christmas break. Superintendent
Walseth was joined by board members and administrators and one
very famous architect who deserves much of the credit for the
beautifully designed building as tour guides including: Janet
Moran, Reed Campbell, Dr. Carol Muns, Paul Bloom Ear Wolleat and
Kevin Donnay. The “lunch ladies” from Washington delivered a
very excellent and filling box lunch that included fruit and
carrot sticks, two choices of sandwiches on homemade buns, chips,
cookies or brownies and a special chocolate stick. They had
earlier given me a private tour of their beautiful new kitchen
that includes a man size walk in oven, and proofing and mixing
equipment to bake all of their own breads. |
|
| The cafetorium probably epitomizes the theme of
the whole building. It has three levels which are intended to
encourage students to form smaller groups. It will seat 500-600
with tables and 1,000-1,100 with chairs. The lunch ladies told me
when the building is at full capacity they will be serving
continuously from 11:00 to a little after one and will have what
amounts to 16 lunch periods. Kevin Donnay with the help of
thousands of hours of input from all concerned has produced a
building that is functional, beautiful, safe, economical and built
to last. Superintendent Walseth called it a 70 year facility. He
also said that during the day, entrance will only be through the
front door and the whole building can be locked down with one turn
of a key. Students will walk into their new home and immediately
get the feeling of space. The individualized classroom areas will
allow the establishment of schools within the school and a much
more personalized and caring environment for each student. A huge
plus is the ability to look out of the windows at the lovely
surrounding area—having taught for 25 of my 32 years in a room
without a view, I know how important this is to improving overall
attitude. The building is very advanced and equipped with the
latest technology that will guarantee the safest possible
environment as well as efficiency (imagine not having to turn on
the lights because they sense the need and come on by themselves
or not having to adjust the thermostat because the level of heat
will be directly related to the number of people in the room). The
School provides for separation of grades with the fifth and sixth
grade on one side and the 7th and 8th on the other. Academically
their goal is to educate every kid every day. Their other goal is
to combine meeting the needs of the kids with a building that is
user friendly for the community. Thanks for the tour, as Kevin
Donnay said to me, “Does it make you want to be an educator
again?” and I replied, “I would love to get a chance to teach
in a facility like this!” |

| Announcements |
| The Salvation Army Bell Ringing Service Club
Trophy is at state. We came in second last year to the dreaded
rival club, not to be mentioned in a good Sertoma newsletter. Let’s
all sign up to ring bells in front of Fleet Farm in
December. |
| The Brainerd area is once again setting the
pace for standards of education with the opening of Forest
View Middle School. Not only was this the best answer to the
space needs that the growth of the community had created but
it also creates a tremendous asset for the community itself.
If you did not have a chance to tour the building yet, please
do so if given the chance again. |

Schedule |
| Remember:
Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job
to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a
ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be
divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club
Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

| Of Note: |
|
| Keep Charles Bartels and his family
in your prayers this week. He just lost his mother in a tragic
fire. |
|
| Rumor Corner |
- Kevin Donnay got a little politicking in today—ended up
eating lunch with Kevin Goedker and Randy Hukriede. We all
know because Jerry pointed it out.
- Jeff Olson was always the class clown. He tried to start a
food fight but was immediately in trouble with the big
“guy”. The No Nonsense teacher voice is always there even
if you have gotten to the top of the ladder.
- A very warm and loving Happy Thanksgiving to all. Hopefully
by the time you read this you will be stuffed with leftovers
and home safe.

go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This
community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the
opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as
well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to
thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive
feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the
