We had a very informative two part program today that had Lori
Ukkelberg and Dave Burggraff presenting valuable information
about the changes to the sponsorship program and the issues
about the Foundation. Lori spoke first and presented the new
format for sponsorship protocol. She emphasized the fact that
this information will now be available on our webpage including
printable donations request form. We will also be updating the
list of donations for the year which amounted to $27,466. The
committee which meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month after the
noon meeting is authorized to give out $300 per month without
Board approval. Larger donations are first approved by the
committee and submitted to the Board. Membership is the largest
change to the sponsorship committee. Members other than the
second vice president cannot hold major office in the club. This
is to encourage more people to become involved. |

Dave presented information on the Foundation. In order to
understand the Foundation and its relationship to our club, you
must understand the levels
of membership that are possible. Our
club joins the foundation for a minimum payment of $175 that
covers the club and makes us eligible to apply for smaller
grants. To qualify for larger grants, the club must vote to pay
$25 per person which in our case could amount to over $5,000.
Individuals can contribute more to the foundation by personally
becoming a $100+fellow. We have made good use of our membership
in the past applying for grants to install both the neo-natal
hearing testing equipment in the St. Cloud Hospital and the
phonic ear program in our schools. Karen Owen was going to share
more about the grant program but time ran out. She has served as
district representative to the Foundation on several occasions.
The third tier of Sertoma International Programs is the
Foundation itself which is a separate entity governed by
Trustees who deal with the pledges, grants, and endowments that
are part of Sertoma. It is their job to manage the fund and
decide how much is available each year for grants. Endowments
have enabled us to offer CLC scholarships, fund Camp Sertoma
through the establishment of the Jon Haapajoki Fund, and
participate in the Sai Gau scholarship program. The decision
about whether or not to participate in the foundation which at
the present time is optional is a complicated issue with many
different aspects. The Board will be voting on whether or not to
contribute the $25 per member at its next regular meeting. If
you have some input on this issue, please contact either Dave
Burggraff or Jim Potvin for more information. Another good
source of information would be Kathy Christensen who served as
Vice President of the Foundation when she was in Northfield and
actually wrote the mission statement still used by the
Foundation. It reads: “The Sertoma Foundation, an international
charity, believes that universal communication; whether heard,
seen or spoken, is the key to human understanding. The purpose
of the Sertoma Foundation is to support the approved charitable
and educational programs of our Sertoma Family through effective
fund raising, investment of funds and the distribution of
proceeds. Through the financial support of Sertoma’s programs,
we become the catalyst for greater human understanding and
Service to Mankind.” |

Remember: Greeters
(Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people
at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided
with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the
social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties.
You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to
greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket
if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided
by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane
Rook Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you

Sertoman of the Day
|
Valerie
Fournier, who is an account executive with Ikon Office
Solutions, was our honored Sertoman of the Day. Valerie was
brought into the club in February of this year by Joe Schulte.
She joined because she was new to the area and as she said, “My
hobbies revolve around being social”. A big social occasion
coming up for Valerie is her wedding which is scheduled for June
12. 2004. Ikon’s motto is Document Efficiency at Work and that
is where Val comes in. She has worked for the company two and ½
years. Her Sertoma activities include the social committee and
the membership and orientation committee. She attended college
at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. graduating with a
sociology major and a psychology and communication minor. She
especially felt that her studies abroad at the University in
Sweden made her a much more well rounded individual. Her most
embarrassing moment lasted 9 years-it was her job with Old
Country Buffet. |

Of Note: |
|
What Sertoma club came home from a district meeting with “hog
wild” awards. Tami Webb presented a fistful (10-12) badges to
Julia Sullivan who agreed to sew them on the new banner we are
going to need to hold them all. |

|
Congratulations to Mike Boen who received his plaque and new pin
today. As Sertoman of the Year he has been honored with Lifetime
Membership. |

Rumors Corner: |
Pam just got back from Wyoming where she went to chase cowboys.
Her major lesson in life from the trip—you can get 2 feet of snow
off your car before you start home with half a pizza box if your
traveling companion forgot to pack the snow brush. Thanks to Kevin
Goedker who handled the pictures and newsletter for her
( note for Dave, it wasn’t me). |

Edie Hindman’s mom is coming to wash her mouth out with soap—what
was it you said to our illustrious president at today’s meeting

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our
new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy
to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any
photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow
Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job
or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
