Law Enforcement personnel including Crow Wing County Sheriff and
Terry Fairbanks who teaches Criminal Justice at Central Lakes
College were our guest speakers today. Terry briefly introduced
the topic of the discussion since his group at college would
directly benefit from the plan being proposed by Sheriff Eric
Klang. In 2001 the inadequate facilities that law enforcement
used to train officers in gun safety were destroyed by the
tornado. Insurance monies from that disaster allowed the
department to renovate the pistol range located at the Crow Wing
County Fairgrounds. Although a good start has been made on the
facility which will include a classroom and garage area, much
more is needed; and the budget crunch is affecting this project
immensely according to County Commissioner Gary Walters. Sheriff
Klang and all the law enforcement people in the county who go
out and risk their lives every day in situations where the need
for well honed gun skills can mean the difference between life
and death would like us to consider any support we could give to
this project. Their needs include: a range tower for the safety
officer, shooting runways, increasing the impact mound, a
shooting canopy and controlled lighting. With the building shell
completed, the classroom will not be operational until interior
work including electrical is completed. This will be a one site
location for youth hunter safety training sessions, a central
area for law enforcement officers to practice “those instinctive
moves that allow them to act correctly when threatened,”
firearms training area for pre-service law enforcement students
from Central Lakes College, and when scheduled by the officers
an area for community education such as Women’s Shoots or rifle
sighting for hunters. To complete the project will take
approximately $25,500. Community and Sertoma involvement could
come in the form of donations or suggestions for fund raisers. |

Remember: Greeters
(Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people
at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided
with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the
social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties.
You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to
greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket
if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided
by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane
Rook Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

Sponsorship Committee Continues to Move Forward Lori Ukkelberg
again came before the group and talked about the role of the
Sponsorship Committee. They feel that many of our members are not
able to get directly involved in the projects that benefit the
community because Gossamer Ceiling or Pipe and Drape schedules do
not fit in with their work schedules. To give these people and all
of us more opportunity to become directly involved with their
Focus on Sponsorship drive, four times in the next year we will be
actively participating in events that will help four of our
non-profits that have specific needs. The next three meetings will
see us Focus on the Women’s Shelter. With the holidays coming up
they have provided us with a wish list that includes toys, kitchen
items, personal items, bed and bath needs, tools, clothing,
miscellaneous items and gift certificates. Everyone is asked to
bring an item for the wish list to one or all of the next three
meetings and these will be collected and taken to the shelter.
April and May will see us focus on Camp Confidence and Camp
Sertoma. If Michele Sjoblom and Julia Sullivan are reading this
newsletter carefully and call in they can win their sawbuck at
next week’s meeting. Specificially Camp Confidence can use any and
all cleaning materials for the May 22 clean-up day and for use
throughout the year. If you have a bottle of something that you
tried once and then put on the shelf because you liked your old
stuff better, here is a chance to donate it to a good cause. They
also need buckets, mops, paper towels, etc. Camp Sertoma
specifically is looking for food for the summer camp. More details
will follow about Red Cross and Kinship which will be the last two
focus groups.

Rumors Corner: |
-
Hawk in tights-an encore presentation. Thanks to Dale Bolt
for the nice picture. The play was so popular they are
rescheduling it and you can call the church for further details
or talk to Hawk. President Potvin thought maybe he was doing a
Monty Python performance, playing Robin Hood or was maybe one of
Santa’s little helpers having a temper tantrum.
- Diane Rook Johnson has a “nudey” story to tell. See her for
details.
- Randy Phillips whose resemblance to a certain guy on the
Walker Texas Ranger show has been noted before is now the Quaker
Oats Guy (another Hawkism).
- John Raboin is running for Crow Wing County Sheriff and
Brian Lehman thinks he would like to be Crow Wing County
Commissioner.

Find a Sawbuck Corner: Call 829-7761
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our
new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy
to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any
photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow
Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job
or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
