Patricia
Charlson, Executive Director of the local chapter of the
American Red Cross, was today’s speaker. Her main goal was to
talk about the efforts that the local group which serves Cass
and Crow Wing Counties has made in the past year to improve
services to the community. The quality of delivery of services
to local people who have suffered the devastation of a house
fire is one of her major concerns. This was brought to a
personal level in the question and answer session when Jeff
Birks and Laura Beilke who had both lost their homes to fires
spoke. Laura displayed a blanket she had received and talked
about the kindness that was shown to her family at the Red
Cross. She also spoke about the value of the advice they
received. Jeff, on the other hand, was very disappointed in the
service. He did say that he felt that they needed more
volunteers and proceeded to say that he would like to get
involved. At present they have 5 volunteers o n
24 hour call and have developed a new pager system that should
assure that every fire is covered. Patricia urged people to call
the office to report needs that the Red Cross can meet. They
currently have a supply of blankets produced in cooperation with
the United Way and a fire comfort kit with personal items to
help fire victims face the next day. Their other main duties
include health and safety classes, lifeline programs (home
monitoring for sick and elderly), and armed forces emergency
services as well as trying to cope with any natural disasters
such as tornados which may occur in the area. Patricia said,
“The Red Cross Logo is the most recognized logo in the world; my
goal is to make it the most recognized logo in the Brainerd
Lakes area.” |

Sertoman of the Day
|
Mike
Howard of Design Adventure Cabinets was today's honored Sertoman.
Those of us who have been in Sertoma for a while recognized Mike
in spite of his disguise. Really, he did not come in second in a
boxing match, he had corrective surgery for his eyelids. Mike
has been a member of the club for four years and was brought in
by Paul Bloom who reportedly told Mike he should join the club
because it has lots of women. Mike immediately got involved by
taking over the huge task of organizing pipe and drape. Mike has
a wonderful sense of humor and has brought much merriment to the
club. The Sponsorship Committee also considers him a valuable
member. As a Charter Member of the Camp Sertoma Club, he has
been very active in that organization also. He has been married
to his wife Barb who is a nurse for 33 years and they have a 27
year old son. Mike likes to hunt, fish, play poker, golf and
talk to the ladies. He was born in Minnesota and decided to
start his own business after working in construction and at the
Floor to Ceiling Store. In spite of his opening comment, "You
will soon be saying take the mike away from Mike," he gave us a
very good picture of himself in a brief speech. |

Of Note: |
|
|
- Welcome new members Sara Nelson, Trent Bowman, Darlene
Kersting, and Julie Linn.
- Keep Lynn Franz in your prayers, she is having some medical
tests.

Rumors Corner: No good rumors this week so we will pick some humor to share: |
|
|
| There was a feud between the preacher and music director of a
local country church. It seems the first hint of trouble came when
the preacher preached on dedicating yourselves to service. The
choir director chose to sing "I Shall Not Be Moved." Trying to
believe it was a coincidence, the preacher put the incident behind
him.
The next Sunday he preached on giving. Afterwards, the
congregation squirmed as the director led them in the hymn, "Jesus
Paid It All." By this time, the preacher was losing his temper.
Sunday mornings attendance swelled as the tension between the
two built. A large crowd showed up the next week to hear his
sermon on the sin of gossiping.
Would you believe the choir director selected, "I Love To Tell
The Story?" There was no turning back.
The following Sunday the preacher told the congregation that
unless something changed, he was considering his resignation. The
entire church gasped when the music director led them in, "Why Not
Tonight."
Truthfully, no one was surprised when the preacher resigned a
week later, explaining that Jesus had led him there and Jesus was
leading him away.
Still, it would have been better all around if the choir
director had resisted the temptation to close with, "What a Friend
We Have in Jesus." |

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.
