Captain Paul Ferguson of the Brainerd Salvation Army was today's
guest speaker. The Salvation Army is a Protestant church group
that originated over 100 years ago in London as a Christian
denomination. It has grown into the largest religious and
humanitarian organization in the world. Eighty-four cents of
every dollar collected by the Salvation Army goes directly back
to the people it serves. And serve it does in countless ways. In
Brainerd they run the food shelf, provide bus tickets for people
who need to travel to see a sick relative or attend a funeral,
provide vouchers for the thrift store so that people who are in
need of clothes or furniture can choose from the donated items
to help get them back on their feet in times of need, and
countless other social services too numerous to mention. They
are on the spot for local and national emergencies--they were
the first social services group on the scene at the 9/11
disaster in New York City for instance. Capt. Ferguson shared
some local numbers with us. They served 8.493 people in Brainerd
last year, a pretty impressive number considering that our
population in Crow Wing County is around 51,000. Sertoma
continues to contribute to the Salvation Army as a group, but we
are also encouraged to donate our time. The "Army" is always
looking for volunteers especially this time of year when
bell-ringers are needed. The question and answer session
afterward centered around the process for getting involved with
the Angel Trees and the possibility that Brainerd will soon need
a shelter for the homeless--particularly the transient
population that is growing as our community grows. The new
Thrift Store is located at 601 Norwood in the old Imgrund Auto
Body building. Fas 829-7761 Bill O'Hara.Program and services of
the Salvation Army are available to all persons without
discrimination with the only criteria for service being a
demonstrated need. If you could bell-ring, call the Salvation
Army Corps Community Center at 829-1120. One interesting fact we
learned from the clever introduction of this speaker was the
fact that Todd Bassett who heads up the 2.1 billion dollar
Salvation Army social services enterprise collects only $13,000
a year whereas the president and CEO of the American Red Cross
earns a whopping $450,000. |

Dear Sertoma Members, Thank you for allowing me to come and
share my message with your club. The Brainerd Walk was extremely
successful. Our walk brought in almost $36,000, a 50% increase
from last year. Thanks again for helping us financially. We
couldn't have done it without you. Sincerely, Quinn Nystrom |

A Special Sertoma Thanksgiving |
As Sertoma Members, let us take a moment to think of all the
things we have to be thankful for this year. The following is my "Sertoma"
list.
I am thankful for:The chance to belong to a service club that
contributes to so many wonderful causes in my community.
The opportunity to have lunch every Wednesday with a great
group of people.
The chance to work with and learn from two guys who are
satisfied with working behind the scenes and who deserve a lot
more credit for their work, Steve Augustinack and Bob Sherman.
Belonging to a club that values humor as an essential part of
their meeting.
The knowledge that should I ever need them, I have a moral
support group that is just about 200 strong.
Cathy Christensen's and Carole Paulsen's smiles.
All the wonderful new members that have joined in the last year
and gotten involved in activities. |

Find a Sawbuck Corner: Call 829-7761
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
