Four
individuals actively involved in Bridges Workplace
connection and Career Academies made lengthy
presentation to Sertoma today. Their many focus was
to interest business people in the audience in
supporting their efforts to help high school
students explore careers by providing hands-on
experiences. Pictured from left to right are Kevin
Thesing, Mary Gottsch, Cindy Brey, and Pat Swarthout.
This is a partnership between business and education
to help students fulfill personal and career goals.
Many teenagers do not understand what the job itself
involves and they end with a degree that they cannot
use. The interesting fact is that 20% of the jobs of
the future do not need college degrees. Young people
need to be encouraged to stay in the area and train
for these jobs. The new worker needs to thinking for
change, willing to speak up and must possess the
ability to solve problems and engage effectively
with co-workers. The three goals of the local
organization have been to increase career education,
to promote hands on learning for credit through the
Bridges Career Academy and Workplace Connection and
conduct a marketing and educational promotion to get
businesses and education involved. November 18th is
second big Career Exploration Day scheduled at
Craguns. They are expecting 1800 plus students from
22 schools. Businesses were contacted and areas were
set up where all businesses from a certain area
would create hands-on experiences and provide
personnel who can directly relate what these new
jobs are all about as well as acquainting the
students with some of the equipment. Mary has been
absolutely amazed at the cooperation between rival
businesses to set up these experiences. Most school
districts have had to cut their career exploration
programs and many of their vocational offerings
because of lack of funds. The goal of this group is
to expand their offerings into the junior high
school to cover these gaps. |

Winter
Wonderland
- Updates to the worker's schedule can
now be done online at the
Winter Wonderland Volunteer Sign-up page.
- November 20th Chamber Chow/Sertoma
Winter Wonderland joint meeting. DO NOT
MEET at Bonanza that Wednesday.
- People needed for the sales
committee to hand deliver invitations to
the preview party and to contact current
sponsors and update their information.
- Today Steve Mau acknowledged all the
people in attendance who had helped to
get 40 of the 50 displays up. Our new
exciting Statue of Liberty with
fireworks is going to wow them. People
who can check bulbs are needed
desperately. They plan on working the
rest of this week (starting at 10) and
into the beginning of next week. Call
Steve Mau to check on work schedules.
- Rain on Thursday postponed the work
at the Arboretum. It is re-scheduled for
Monday at 9 a.m. when the crew hopes to
be able to finish the displays and the
bulb checking if enough people show up.

minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you

Nathan
Kempke of Business Information Technology Solutions was today's
honored Sertoman. Steve Augustinack encouraged his co-worked
Douglas Benzer to join and Doug soon brought him to Sertoma
also. He wasn't really sure that this was the organization for
him until he volunteered at the vision and hearing screening and
began to realize what a huge impact Sertoma has on the Brainerd
area. Nathan has lead a nomadic life that took him from his
birthplace in Illinois to high school in Pine River, some US
army reserve training and service including Germany, and
experiences with the Airborn Division. He returned to the area,
went to college and then got involved with the family interest
in technology. The final result was the establishment of BITs
which is located in downtown Brainerd and is a Microsoft
Certified Partner specializing in design, installation and
administration of business. He and Amy have recently become
parents of baby boy Kayden. Amy is a nurse who is working on her
RN degree. They live on a hobby farm and raise lots of animals.
His most embarrassing moment involved an incident in the army
that earned him the nickname "Dual Exhaust". |

Rumor Corner
|
|
Today was a quiet day since we had little time for merriment or
socializing. In lieu of the usual local humor, here is something
to enjoy. TEN PUNS |
TEN PUNS
It is said that the ability to make and understand PUNS is
the highest level of language development. Here are the top 10
winners in the International Pun Contest. |
- A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons.
The Stewardess looks at him and says, 'I'm sorry, sir, only one
carrion allowed per passenger.
- Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the
other and says, 'Dam!'
- Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a
fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly, it sank, proving once again
that you can't have your kayak and heat it, too.
- Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says, 'I've lost my electron.'
The other says, 'Are you sure?' The first replies, 'Yes, I'm
positive.'
- Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during
a root canal? His goal: transcend dental medication.
- A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were
standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament
victories.
After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and
asked them to disperse. But why they asked, as they moved off.
'Because,' he said, 'I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an
open foyer.'
- A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of
them goes to a family in Egypt and is named Ahmal. The other
goes to a family in Spain ; they name him Juan. Years later,
Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon
receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she
also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, 'They're
twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal.'
- A group of friars were behind on their belfry payments, so
they opened a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone
liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across
town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good
fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and
begged the friars to close. They ignored him. So, the rival
florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious
thug in town to 'persuade' them to close. Hugh beat up the
friars and trashed their store, saying he'd be back if they
didn't close up shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving
that only Hugh can prevent florist friars. (Oh, so bad!!)
- Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the
time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet.
He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and, with
his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him (Oh,
man, this is SO BAD, it's good) a super calloused fragile mystic
hexed by halitosis.
- And, finally, there was the person who sent ten different
puns to friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns
would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.
