Jeff
Olson with help from Mariucci Fiesta Chairman Julia Sullivan and
Pam Sachs presented an exciting introduction to the Fiesta for
those who have never participated. Everyone enjoyed hearing about
Jeff's first trip to Minnesota where he sported a pony tail and a
beard and ended up washing dishes at an early Fiesta. He had
stopped at Camp because of his training in Outdoor Recreation and
ended up applying for the job of Camp Director when it opened up
and the rest is history.
Jeff spoke about John Mariucci and about how many of the
Sertoma members including Chuck Bartels and Bob Ehrich have been
involved in this tremendous activity since its inception. Jeff
took this opportunity to be a Sertoma member and not the Executive
Director of Camp so that he could tell us how much this activity
means to Camp Confidence. According to Jeff, "The Fiesta happens
to be a happy fun day which brings everyone from the Classic
together at Camp and allows Sertomans to do what they do
best--service to mankind."
In this case it is the 12,663 camper days that Confidence
Learning provided last year due in large part to
contributions
made by this fundraiser which brings in around $80,000 with the
Golf and Fishing events and the Fiesta. Without the volunteerism
that Sertoma epitomizes at this event, Camp could not offer its
quality program with only eleven staff members.
The various committee members were introduced and Julia handed
out sign up sheets. As Jeff said, "This is a time for Sertoma to
brag." Both Julia and Jeff thanked Jeff Marchand and Cub Foods for
their immense contribution of donating the food and allowing the
bread making to take place at their store. The talk concluded with
a slide show of past Mariucci photos by Pam and some historical
photos donated by Charlie Bartels. If you missed the slideshow and
would like to see it,

One good reason for attending the Fiesta this year even if you
cannot make the daytime work shift is to find out which Sertoman
is being honored as Volunteer of the Year! |

| Sertoman of the Day |
Bob
Nibbe may be in deep dark serious trouble (as a former student of
mine, his wife Caroline will certainly recognize that phrase). As
Sertoman of the Day he started a new tradition--he brought a
prize. Actually, it was a Gourd Birdhouse that he grew last year
and the lucky winner was Tami Webb. He also brought seeds so that
we could all grow our own.
He and Caroline have four boys hence the name of his farming
operation Boys-n-Berries. They just planted 11,000 strawberries,
they have 70 acres of hay, and the just received some fun
publicity for their involvement in wind turbine electrical
generation. His hobby is collecting unfinished projects but it is
obvious that he enjoys farming.
Bob calls himself the Chief Pothole Engineer for MNDot which he
claims is a public relations organization. He has worked there for
24 years but definitely prefers his farming activities. He claims
to embarrass himself every time he is on stage with the Swinging
Sertomans. Actually Bob is a very talented contributor to that
group. His sponsor was Kevin Wernberg who is still a Sertoma
member but attends the Morning Club. Besides his activities with
the Swinging Sertomans, Bob tries to contribute as much as
possible to all the other activities that require volunteers. He
is in charge of the Heritage Essay Contest. Bob remarked, "I
really enjoy the club and think it is progressing in all the right
directions." |

Of
Note |
We
were joined by two of the BHS Scholarship winners, Megan
Augustinack and Garret Wedan, pictured here with Scholarship
Coordinator Bonnie Cumberland.
Garret plans on attending CLC and moving on to the University
of North Dakota to major in computer science. Megan plans to
attend Concordia College in Moorhead with an interest in
education, possibly including American Sign Language.
Bonnie commended both of these individuals for their exemplary
beginnings in service to mankind. |

-
Welcome back Tom Steiger
-
Charlie Bartels got an F- today for trying to pretend he was
Raboin
-
Anita Travica ended up paying lost sponsor fines for Carol W and
being razzed by the President because she always looks like she
just came back from a vacation.
-
LoAnn Reponen is either the "top" or "tall" gal to go to at the
Mariucci Fiesta. Gus liked top.
-
Thanks Gus for your able bodies assistance with the slide
show--it was so much more effective on the big screen instead of
the TV.
-
Being sergeant and collecting fines is "a simple game" according
to Bryan--he asks and you are suppose to give.
-
Dave Clausen's happy fine was for making the newspaper for
passing a test he has been studying for at work for nine months.
Congrats Dave. Pam gave him a hard time because he is so
photogenic and in so many of her Mariucci shots. He explained
that some of them were back in the good old days when he wasn't
married.
-
Dick Stoltman took off because he was about to become a grandpa
and President Mau departed early for some strange reason
something about Kinder Friends. Brian Lehman was going to get
fined for his pic with the gov but he snuck out also.
-
Realtors being on the dark side--a new expression that will
probably hang around for a while and some thing we have to thank
Bob Nibbe for also.
-
The Sheriff got everyone in trouble today because he doesn't
have a name badge. He didn't even get fined for being late.
