What
a busy day at Sertoma. First DeAnn Barry, who volunteered to
postpone her presentation a while back, spoke to the membership
about the Senior Center. She was followed by David Trehey would is
a Boy Scout Executive based out of Sartell and in charge of our
local Pine Tree District.
DeAnn originally brought us some of the scrumptious donuts that
the Senior Center is famous for, but alas this time we didn't get
a second batch. Anywhere from 160-180 dozen are made fresh every
Thursday. The fabulous donuts are the second biggest source of
revenue for the Center after the mill levy. DeAnn remarked, "We
are very busy and active and we encourage everyone who is 55 and
over to become a member and support the Center." Her excellent
presentation was accompanied by some very informative handouts.
For example over one hundred vendors make hand made crafts and
sell them in the Gift Shop. They recycle cards into many wonderful
things. Trips, fishing launches, exercise and wellness activities,
bingo, cards, dances, the list of fun things to do goes on and on.
DeAnn
however spoke today on an issue that is keeping many Seniors from
fully enjoying these wonderful opportunities. The Senior Center is
located on Kingwood Street and definitely needs more parking. This
ongoing project started with the recent addition in the alley and
needs $135,000 to add many additional spaces. As one member
remarked, "Great news, we have the money for the parking lot, but
it is still in your pocket." The seniors are doing everything they
can to raise money, but they need your help. DeAnn concluded her
presentation by asking us to join in providing space for seniors
by contributing to the project.
David's presentation focused on the positive aspects of Scouting.
Eight hundred local boys participate and his regional area of
twelve counties includes 5,000 members. In the United States alone
there are 94 million Scouting alumni. They are gearing up for the
once in four years Ripley Rendezvous in early June which is a
great partnership with the National Guard. He also discussed the
focus of the local boy scout camp which is now geared toward
younger boys and keeping them involved in the program. |

Of
Note |
Today's meeting included a heartfelt letter from Linda Hamilton
and Mary Lastovich, Brainerd School Nurses. They were excited
about the addition of the ninth grade vision and hearing screening
to the yearly program which already screened several other grades.
They remarked, "This added goal has been fulfilled with the
unselfish and enthusiastic effort of the Sertoma Club. The student
numbers always challenge us but every child present was able to
get through the lines and have their eyes and ear examined. This
past year the Sertoma Club has donated over 96 hours of time to
screening students. We would never be able to carry out the
recommended hearing and vision screenings without the support of
this service club."
President Steve Mau spent a great deal of time reading thank you
notes at this meeting. Besides the school nurses, Sertoma was
thanked for providing $1,000 worth of scholarships for the recent
high school awards, contributing to Junior Achievement's Exchange
City Program, giving scholarships to spring CLC students, and
contributing to the grad blast. Congratulations to Megan
Augustinack who was one of the winners of our scholarship as well
as others.
Sue
Slaybaugh and her husband Bob announce the arrival of Ashley Marie
who was born yesterday and weighed in a 6 # 14 oz. From her
newborn picture she is either going to be a cheerleader or a
politician!! Congratulations.
The Gossamer Ceiling Crew and the Flag people deserve a big round
of applause for all their hard work. President Mau talked today
about how worthwhile it was for he and his children to take a
route last Saturday when we were very shorthanded. |

-
What brother of what bald all over banker is suppose to have
shaved his tummy to stay in the family?
-
Beer was definitely a problem today. Lots of convention goers
had to pay a dollar for not drinking enough beer (Bill wanted
new not leftover for the ditch pick) and our poor Scoutmaster
was very confused. He thought we were drinking beer we picked up
in the ditches.
-
Proofreading is a problem for Bill also. He claims to be perfect
and volunteered his wife as an additional source of proofreading
remarking, "My wife is an excellent proofreader, she even finds
fault with me."
-
President Mau is having fun with his last few days in office. He
got in a turf war with Bill over who had the most flags, took
umbrage with Bryan who told him "You clean up nice for a white
boy" when he was spotted in his suit at the awards program at
the high school. He also got called on the carpet for "cheap
shots". Let's not have too much fun!!
-
Bill misunderstood the intent of the parking request--something
about providing more teenage parking for seniors who want a make
out spot.
-
What's this about our talented photographer and his happy fine
for dealing with 12 scantily dressed ladies. We all want the
rest of the story.
-
The guys at the end of the "good" table were discussing fishing
a little too loudly during intros but they sneaked by since the
Sergeants were amply supplied with fine facts. How big were
those fish Aaron, Chuck, and Gerry?
