In 1987, a group of citizens concerned with the welfare of animals
in our area, gathered at a kitchen table at 126 Birchridge Drive
in Brainerd and developed what is now the Heartland Animal Rescue
Team, known as H.A.R.T. Starting with just a handful of
volunteers, it now has 8 paid staff, room for about 40 dogs and 30
cats, and an unbelievable show of support from the community. HART
continues to grow every year, as there is always a tremendous need
to help those who can't help themselves.
Our two guests at noon Sertoma were there to give information about the upcoming "Hoofing
It for HART" fund raiser which will take place in Nisswa this
coming Saturday. Participants are encouraged to bring their pets
for part or all of the five mile walk. Registration is at 9 a.m at
the Community Center with a 10:30 start for the walk. Dan Hegstad
who is station manager for Lakeland Public Television is the
honorary chairperson and will take part in this companion walk. He
shared his experiences adopting a wonderful cat from HART. He was
followed by the Executive Director Holly Ailts. A former police
officer, Holly has opened HART up to accept all animals not just
the impounded ones. Holly has seen 2100 animals pass through the
doors in her first year of this open admission policy. Right now
adoption is down so if you are considering making this move, it is
a good time. The staff are trained to help you pick out an
appropriate animal. The companion walk includes a reunion of HART
dogs, Carol Manly with some excellent training demonstrations and
even a "Radar Run" where the dogs compete. This is HART'S biggest
fund raiser. Go to their website at
http://hartpets.org/ for more information. |

Of
Note |
There was an excellent turnout for the Ditch PIck last Thursday
which started at Vacationland. Thanks to Missy Lake and TJ's Log
Cabin for rescuing the picnic supper. We hope Gary Loge gets
better, he has back problems. The menu became excellent broasted
chicken from TJ's. The Nibbe's took advantage of the chance to
bring their children and enjoy the fun as well as learning about
community service. To see more pictures just go to the Sertoma
Album link and click on Vacationland. It also contains pictures
some of the Sertomans who spent a rainy Saturday helping out. We
received a heartfelt thank you from Donna Burggraff which
President Mau read today. She wrote a long thank you that
included, "Thanks to you Vacationland is open and running. Your
support, friendly greetings, and cards of support have given us
the uplifting energy to move on in our lives and work on Dave's
recovery." |
