Program
Dale Brady - Sertoma SpeakerDale Brady and Debbie Struthers from the Northland Arboretum visited Sertoma today with two purposes in mind. First of all, Dale invited us to their Northland Arboretum Spring Fling which will be held Friday, May 5th at 6:30 p.m. at the visitor's center. Gourmet hors doeurves, music by the Skatyrs and a Silent Auction round out the evening. Tickets are $45 and still available by calling 218-829-8770.

Dale also was excited to share his vision of the future for the Arboretum since the golf course will be developed and water run-off will have to be handled by the Arboretum. He began by saying what an excellent idea the development of the Winter Wonderland was. The plan for handling the excessive water which will involve the DNR, the Audubon Society, Crow Wing County and the Army Corps of Engineers to mention just a few of the agencies involved, will be the construction of a pond system. The system will hook up with their current pond which will be aerated, improving drainage through the creek into the Mississippi River, and provide an area for shoreland projects and bird sanctuaries.

A system of walkways will connect with the Paul Bunyan Trail, the Baxter Trail and the Brainerd trails and hopefully will include a cardio vascular rehab trail and a bog walk which will start behind the Civic Center. All told, it will involve 1,000 acres of green space when hooked up with the new park being planned by Brainerd. A press conference in June to announce these plans will involve the governor and many political dignitaries. Dale and Debbie hope that Sertoma will continue to support the Arboretum.

Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes.
