Travis Rose - Recipient of the $300 Sertoma Scholarship. It was time to celebrate the future at today’s Sertoma meeting. Soraya Hills, Travis, Rose and Jennifer Beilke were this year’s recipients of the three hundred dollar Sertoma Scholarships.

Cheryal Hills had to get up and tell us about her remarkable daughter because Soraya is taking advanced college classes and in fact has completed her first year of college while still in high school and she had a final test today. Soraya was a recent visitor to Sertoma when the debate team gave its presentation and political science is definitely one of her three objectives when she attends the University of Minnesota next year. Her other two interests are theology and engineering. She intends to spend at least one of her college years studying in Europe and hopes to move to the Boston area for graduate school so she is closer to the political scene.

Travis Rose who is the son of Steve Rose is already a pilot. He intends to attend college at UND for commercial aviation. He is a track star who just finished second in the triathlon. He has been involved in scouting since he was very small and achieved his Eagle Scout status. His job with John Raboin doesn’t seem to have affected his outlook on life too much!!! He currently works at Black Bear where the tips are better.

Jennifer Beilke - Recipient of the $300 Sertoma Scholarship.Jennifer Beilke is attending the University of Utah where there are mountains mountains and more mountains so she can indulge her love of skiing. The University there has a great biology program and she will be close to some of her family. She was girls track captain, a peer tutor and on the class cabinet. She currently works at Grand View and is the daughter of our own Laura Beilke. Congratulations to all of these fine scholarship winners and thanks again to Tom Rosenberger for presenting these awards and the committee for their work in coordinating these efforts with the school.

Thanks Karla Nelson for taking notes!!!!

Sertoman of the Day
Sertoman of the Day - Pat CharlsonPat Charlson was today’s honored Sertoman. Pat has been a member for a year and joined under the tutelage of Laura Beilke. She first attended Sertoma as a speaker for her organization, the American Red Cross. She was very impressed with the friendliness of the whole group and felt that Joe Schultes went out of his way to make her feel comfortable. She has been married to her husband Larry for 20 years and they do not have any children. Her hobbies include fishing, motorcycle riding, cooking and knitting. Pat is very active in the community working as a Garrison City Council member, a cemetery board member and in the VFW Auxiliary. She reminded us to honor our military this Memorial Day by buying a poppy. The Brainerd Chapter of the American Red Cross services both Cass and Crow Wing County. She has been the executive director for four years. She joined Sertoma because it is a diverse group that has the same objectives as the Red Cross-to help communities in times of need. She immediately volunteered to be a note taker and intends to get involved more.
Of Note
The Dave Clausens are proud parents of a new baby girl that they named Bailey.
We are keeping Pam Bye and Lynn Franz in our prayers again this week.
Our sympathies are extended to Milo Johnson who lost his brother after a long bout with cancer.
Welcome back Val Fiksdal (6 weeks to baby time) and Kevin Wroolie.
Congratulations to Laura Beilke and her husband on 22 years of marriage. Her daughter assured Gus that she is just as fun at home as she is at Sertoma.
Jeff Marchand and the Cub Food people have stepped forward and donated the food for the Mariucci Fiesta. This is a tremendous contribution that will make things much easier and smoother this year.
Rumor Corner
  • Charlie’s Lobotomies had our sergeant who dressed up today and got to fine people for harassing him a little confused. Nice suit Jason Bertram, the pope would have been proud to meet you.
  • We had entirely too many Kevin Wroolies today but there is only one original-welcome back Kevin and you didn’t even have to greet today.
  • Lori Ukkelberg wants two baseball boys—what are you going to do with them Lori?
