Program
Brainerd Sertoma - Dan RyanCamp Journey gave our speaker, Don Ryan, a chance to step away from his public role as County Attorney and talk about an exciting new event that will take place the weekend of May 20-22 at Confidence Learning Center.

Don and his group, the Rotary Club, were inspired by the Camp Amanda presentation last year. After discussing the possibility of a local camp with that organization, a decision was made to start Camp Journey, a grief counseling camp for boys and girls ages 7-18 who have experience the loss of a loved one. Although this is the Rotary Centennial Project, they are hoping that it will stay the community effort that it immediately became. Don formed a core committee that included our own Cheryal Hills who got kudos for her excellent work on the project. The staff at Confidence Learning Center who donated the facility went to work researching ideas and putting together a blended camp experience that takes ideas from all over the country. Don explained that the critical period when children develop problems after the death of a loved one is 12-24 months. Many of them blame themselves and part of the Camp Curriculum is a doctor explaining medical causes of death. The trained grief counselors will be in each cabin along with “Cabin Buddies” who are volunteer staff. The goal of Camp Journey is to “increase friendships with peers through experiential activities and meaningful conversation while helping process and remember loss in a safe, fun environment.” Currently 20 children are signed up for the first Camp, which is an excellent number for the first session. One unique part of Camp is the reunion which is scheduled for later in the summer to follow up on the effects of the Camp. Parents and caregivers are an important part of the program with special activities planned for Friday night when the Campers are dropped off and Sunday when the final activities take place. The state funeral directors group has contacted Camp Journey and is interested in working with the program.

Thanks Quandee Knoblauch for taking notes!!!!

Announcements
Sertoma Mariucci Fiesta Paul Keprios would like you to mark June 15-17th on your calendar and plan on helping out as the Sertomans gear up to feed between 700 and 1000 people at the Confidence Learning Center Classic.
Camp Sertoma Golf has been moved to September at Eagles Landing. This golf tournament helps to support Camp Sertoma which has doubled in size this year, so we need twice as many golfers. Hopefully, the later date and the more local course will encourage Brainerd Noon Sertomans to sign up for fun and fellowship with Sertomans from all over the state. See Dave Burggraff for signs and entry forms. His goal is 36 teams.
Shoes for Haiti Update - Tom Rosenberger gave us all an update on his project. The high school is on hold in Haiti because of the political situation but his groups continue to travel to the mission to work on projects that can be completed. Tom rounds up shoes and up to this point, the group delivers them. He hopes to cut the cost by purchasing the shoes in Haiti but he can use all the contributions you can spare. Many of these elementary students walk two hours each way to school and the shoes are essential. He also mentioned that he presented three $500 Scholarships on behalf of the club to graduating seniors—all of whom have parents in Sertoma.
Christmas Lights Project - Steve Mau and his committee presented to the Board and will be ready to share with the club in about three weeks. For more information watch your email for the Board Minutes. This is a three year commitment at a busy time of the year.
Board Report - Big news is that we will now go back to being a 100% club-the Board voted to pay $25 per member to the Foundation. Rory challenged the upcoming officers to work on utilizing the grant system that will enable us to get matching grant money for our projects.
May 19CLC Foundation Wine and Cheese Reception at Sherwood Forest? RSVP Diane at the college.

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. Of Note
Camp Journey - Cheryal HillsCongratulations to the committee that worked so hard to get Camp Journey started. Special recognition goes to Cheryal Hills. Don Ryan complimented her when he said, "Cheryal Hills played a big role in the fact that Camp Journey is fully funded, fully staffed and ready to serve all the meals with donated food.”

Welcome back Joyce Frid.

Welcome new members Lori Rubens and Jeff Hiebert.
Rumor Corner
  • John Raboin stand-in today was Jeff Olson since John was volunteering at Camp Confidence. Merle Inne offered to counsel anybody who needed it after John was there.
  • Rory Coit had a bad day today-he got fined for imitating Steve Mau and calling our infamous newsletter editor, “Pammy” (It’s Ok Rory, not even close to some of my nicknames from the students at school).
  • Jason Bertram has sergeant hair.
  • Diane Ulmen got an “It’s about fine fine”
  • Poor Bob Ehrich had to pay Karen Owens’s fine.
  • We are all invited over to Paul Keprios’s house to watch his new plasma TV that he won.
  • Dick Stoltman is now starting a new business-distributing magic fingernail polish which is invisible inside and bright pink outside.
  • What's more intimidating-a roomful of taxpayers or Sertomans? Question of the day from our speaker.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
