Program Part I - Sertoma and Brainerd School Media Class
Release Video |
|
|
A
new video to advertise Camp Sertoma for deaf and hard of hearing
children that takes place each summer at Confidence Learning
Center was debuted at the Great Plains Regional Sertoma Convention
held this past weekend at Aberdeen, South Dakota. Camp Sertoma was
the brainchild of the late Jon Haapajoki, who at one time was
president of the International Sertoma Club and very active in the
Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club. Current President Rory Coit initiated
the plan to produce the video to help show other clubs and
organizations the importance of supporting this unique camp. This
year is the first year that two camps are scheduled from July
11-21st for two age levels. Jennie Bailey, Camp Director, who also
attended the Regional Convention, was overwhelmed by the response
to the video. She said, “This brought tears to many eyes and has
done a great service to promote sponsorships.” Cost for a camper
is $400 and most are sponsored by their local Sertoma Club.
Rory and his cohort, Steve Augustinack, contacted Dave Henschke
who is Brainerd’s TV production teacher at the high school. He
arranged for two students, Rachel Converse and Jeff Pryor, to help
him take the footage at last year’s Camp. Many thanks go to Deb
Woitalla who edited the film and produced the video which lasts
approximately 15 minutes. If you would like a copy of this to
share with your organization, call Camp Confidence at 218-828-2344
and ask for Jenni Bailey.
The
video uses staff and campers to show the goal of Camp Sertoma is
to prove to deaf and hard of hearing children that they can just
be “kids being kids” in the words of Jenni Bailey. “I’m not in
this alone,” is the reaction of most of the campers after they
spend a week immersed in their language, developing leadership
skills, making new life-long friends, and developing deaf pride.
The Camp is volunteer driven from the Sertomans who originally
went out and established the Foundation to the ones that volunteer
to help provide the food service which is not usually part of the
Camp Confidence program. As one Sertoma volunteer remarked, “There
isn’t anybody here that doesn’t love being here and that includes
the campers, the staff and most of all the volunteers.”
A segment from the parents in the video is especially interesting.
One set of parents talked about how their child had become more
responsible and less afraid to try new things on their own.
According to the parents, kids come home and pretend to be
counselors, talk about their experience all year long and can’t
wait to come back.
The video is worth viewing simply for the last part where the
children talk about their experiences. “I love it all,” signed one
student. Fun is a word that comes up again and again. Many talked
about bonding, meeting old friends and finding new ones. More
information about Camp Sertoma is available on their website
www.campsertoma.com.
Seven persons from the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club attended the
convention including Tami Webb who serves as the North Minnesota
Governor. Others were Rory Coit, President; Dave Burggraff, Kari
Robinson, Beth Burnard, Robin Loftis and Mike Howard. Four members
of the new Bemidji Club also joined over 250 attendees. The big
news for our local area is that the Brainerd Noon Sertoma’s bid to
host the 2008 Regional Convention at Maddens was successful.

Program Part II - |
|
|
|
Out with the old, in with the news was the theme of part two of
our program today. Pat Johnson was here from Kinship partners. She
introduced her successor Karla Berg. Karla is from the Walker area
originally and she took this opportunity to introduce us to three
kinship candidates for partners. Laura Beilke celebrated her
kinship partner’s birthday by bringing Carly to the meeting today.
Pat took the opportunity to thank all of the Sertomans she has
worked with over the past years. She especially wanted to make
note of what a huge contribution Gary Walters has made over the
past few years with Pedaling for Partners and Perching for
Partners. This year, Gary and his children are planning to walk
Minnesota from the Iowa border to the Canadian one. Prancing (or
plodding) the Prairie for Partners (just a suggestion from the
audience) hopefully will raise at least as much as its
predecessor.

| Announcements |
| Flag Update - Beth Burnard has the
list of flags sold and would like a salesman or two to contact
the remainder of the people on the list. We have enough flags
and equipment to sell quite a few more this year without
investing any more money. Potential sales profits could be in
the $10,000 range. We have two permanent captains and could
use two more. Right now Jeff Birks is volunteering to head up
on of the remaining teams for the opening event—we need one
more to get started. Thanks Sarah Nelson for taking the last
spot. |
| Meals for Randy and Pam - Mary Marana
is still working on providing meals for the Bye family—be sure
to contact her if you haven’t signed up to provide a home
cooked or restaurant meal. |
| Sertoman of the Day Sandra Bonde is
looking for lots of Sertomans to sign up for Sertoman of the

volunteer. |

| Remember:
Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job
to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a
ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be
divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club
Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

Keep Merle Innes’s mother and Amy Doyle’s father in your prayers
this week-they are hopefully recovering from serious illness. Lynn
would also like you to keep Les in your prayers since he is going
to China for two weeks. |

Big
Thanks from Confidence Learning Center for our contribution to
Diamond in the Rough camp clean up day. Between 9:00 and 2:00 48
volunteers completed numerous tasks that would have taken the Camp
Staff many days to accomplish. A familiar face was new member Gene
Farone who got to 4 wheel his way up to lunch from putting in the
docs. He was assisted by Paul Keprios. |

Greeter?
- Pooch volunteered the dog pound to donate enough money to
keep Gary Walters going when he gets to the Canadian border.
- Diane Ulmen could not remember both her businesses
today-maybe she had too much fun “doing the doctors” at her last
catering gig.

| Photos Photos Everywhere New photos
go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This
community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the
opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as
well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to
thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive
feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the
current photographs or check out the new online directory go
