Sertomans welcomed back Dawn Stattine in her capacity as
Director of YAR (Youth As Resources). It was again a day of
double duty for Dawn since she was named the District Service to
Mankind winner and was presented with her plaque by acting
President Rory Coit.
Dawn’s message about her work with YAR was simple—kids
committed to community projects stay away from dangerous
behaviors and they learn to give back to the community, a
behavior that continues in their adult lives. Seventeen students
are on their board. YAR was brought into the area by the
Initiative Foundation. Grants are given to students who organize
a project , address a youth and community concern (building
leadership skills in youth, strengthening community, reduce drug
and alcohol abuse, etc), have a budget, meet an identified
community need and have a specific end result that can be
reported back to the Board.
Thirty great projects have been accomplished so far by
students ranging in age from kindergarten through 20 years of
age. All projects are supervised by adults and this helps
establish good working relationships. It is funded largely by
grants from the Initiative Foundation, The Family Services
Collaborative, Bremer Foundation, St. Joseph’s Foundation and
the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation.
The skate board project we recently heard about is a very
good example of YAR at work. They have also planted a butterfly
garden for the Woodland Goodland Samaritan Village that has
turned out to be a continuous project. Each year they have The
Battle of the Bands during the Fourth of July celebration to
help raise money for projects. This year it will be held at Don
Adamson Field from 4-11 p.m. on July 2nd with 14 bands
competing. |

May 22 - Diamond in the Rough Camp Confidence Cleanup Day.
Sertoma is having a two week drive to gather up cleaning supplies
for this event. Plan on bringing those cleaning products
cluttering up your shelves or that you tried once but don’t really
like and donate them to the cause. New items are also very
welcome. The green camp van will be parked at Bonanza and you can
place items directly into the van on May 12th and 19th. If you
wish to bring something next week, Pam will take it to Camp in her
truck. Mary’s Wish List for cleaning includes: mops, buckets,
brooms, rakes, paint brushes, any cleaning supplies, scrubby pads
and sponges, dish soap/dishwasher soap, bleach, paper towels,
window cleaners, spray bottles, lemon or furniture oil etc. Bring
your kids, your neighbors, your friends and most of all yourself
to Camp on Saturday, May 22. |
|
June 12 - Regional Twins game for Sertoma. Plans are being
made to make the Twins Baseball Game the spring family social
event. We need to help get at least 500 tickets sold in our REGION
so that our very own Swinging Sertomans can sing the National
Anthem. Two coach buses will be provided if we sell enough
tickets—an adult bus and a family bus. Costs are still being
discussed. |

Schedule |
|
Remember: Greeters
(Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people
at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided
with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the
social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties.
You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to
greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket
if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided
by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

Sertoman of the Day
|
Nancy
Hallam who has only been in the Brainerd area for three months
was today’s honored Sertoman. Nancy works for Super Eight Motel
and this is her first experience managing a motel. She talked
about the great breakfast program Super Eight offers and her
recent training where she learned about the nationwide scope of
Super Eight. She has two children and two grand children. They
moved here in February from Grand Rapids where she worked for
the owners of this Super Eight. She is enjoying the opportunity
to deal more directly with people. She is enjoying the area
since she likes fishing, biking, downhill and water skiing. Her
sponsor is Diane Ulmen and she is looking forward to getting
involved in Sertoma Projects. Her most embarrassing moment so
far in Sertoma is wandering around the Civic Center looking for
the Sertoma Booth (she thought Pipe and Drape was just one). Be
sure to say yes when Sandra Bonde asks you to be—Sertoman of the
Day! |

Twenty people attended the Regional Convention in Mankato, 14
members with assorted family members making up the rest. Dave
Burggraff brought home the International Director’s Banner for the
second time in 25 years when he was elected to that prestigious
office. Congratulations Dave. $22,000 was raised for the Camp
Sertoma Foundation and an additional $5,000 was given directly to
Camp. Our new District Governor is Tami Webb. Congratulations to
her also. |

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.
