Joyce Frid, Director of Resident Services at Excelsior Place
Catered Living in Baxter, was today’s guest speaker. Joyce was
accompanied by Dean Bloemke and centered her speech around a
power point presentation that gave us many pictures of their
outstanding facility. “Private”, “spacious”, and “being home”
are just three of the ways that those who have chosen Excelsior
Place describe the environment.
Catered living is assisted living at it’s finest with
individual choices of level of services. One surprising
statistic shared by Joyce was the fact that most members of
assisted living groups are in the mid-80’s age range. Excelsior
has one or two bedroom apartments, 24 hour staffing, an
emergency response system, home-cooked meals, housekeeping
services, social activities just to name a few of their programs
along with a beautiful setting that includes ponds and wildlife.
Joyce encourages us to drop and visit—the coffee is always
on. It is also a possible meeting place for Sertoma committees
who need a spot. Joyce left us with the thought that at
Excelsior Place, you’ll find all the amenities you need to enjoy
life to its fullest while maintaining your independence. |

See Gary Walters to sign up for Sertoma Night at the Dome.
Sertomans will watch the Twins play the Phillies from great third
base lower reserved seats. For every ticket purchased, the
Minnesota Twins will donate $5 to Camp Sertoma. This is open to
family and friends. Plans are still being made to organize
transportation. This is also your chance to participate in LEAD.
This great activity encourages all Sertomans to be more active in
their club and this training will take place at the Dome before
the game. So sign up for the Twins Game and plan on attending a
great leadership training session beforehand. We will be joining
Sertomans from all over the Great Plains Region and if we sell 500
tickets regionally, our very own Swinging Sertomans will sing the
National Anthem. |

routes (this first time only) are George Moore, Gary Walters, Jeff
Kozitza, and Rory Coit. They will organize their own help. Please
be ready to volunteer to supervise one route this summer.

May 22 - Diamond in the Rough Camp Confidence CLEAN UP DAY.
Sertoma is having a two week drive to gather up cleaning supplies
for this event. Plan on bringing those cleaning products
cluttering up your shelves or that you tried once but don’t really
like and donate them to the cause. New items are also very
welcome. The green camp van will be parked at Bonanza and you can
place items directly into the van on May 12th and 19th.. Mary’s
Wish List for cleaning includes: mops, buckets, brooms, rakes,
paint brushes, any cleaning supplies, scrubby pads and sponges,
dish soap/dishwasher soap, bleach, paper towels, window cleaners,
spray bottles, lemon or furniture oil etc. Bring your kids, your
neighbors, your friends and most of all yourself to Camp on
Saturday, May 22. Please RSVP to Mary (828-2344) if you are
planning to be there. Lunch will be provided and they need a
count. Even if you can only help for a few hours, they would like
to see you. Want to contribute to the cleanup stockpile the easy
way? Stop at Brainerd Lakes Cleaning and Supply at 212 North Fifth
Street across from Meyers with a quart or gallon container. The
best times are from 10 a.m. to noon but call in case Steve is out
on a delivery (330-0261) Steve will fill it up with various
cleaners he buys in bulk and you can just take it to Sertoma next
week and put it in the Green Camp Confidence Van. Thanks Steve for
this generous offer. |

June 12 - Regional Twins game for Sertoma. Plans are being
made to make the Twins Baseball Game the spring family social
event. We need to help get at least 500 tickets sold in our REGION
so that our very own Swinging Sertomans can sing the National
Anthem. Two coach buses will be provided if we sell enough
tickets—an adult bus and a family bus. Costs are still being
discussed. |

Schedule |

Remember: Greeters
(Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people
at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided
with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the
social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties.
You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to
greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket
if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided
by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

| Babies, babies, babies—Congratulations to Kathy Bittner Lee and
her husband who are the parents of a boy, Karter born Easter
Sunday. Paul Gropper is the proud papa of Emma Jo. Paul’s comment
, “She looks like Liza, thank heavens.” Notice the baby-holder. We
are thinking of making this an official Sertoma job and assigning
it to Jeff. Trent Bauman is also in this crew. He said, “Sean
Ervin Baumann was born January 12, 2004, at 8:59 am at St. Joseph.
He is our first child and my future hunting and fishing buddy.
Sean has been such a happy baby and very alert for his age.” Ty
Eigner also announced his second child at a recent Sertoma
meeting. If Pete Odell or John Raboin are reading the newsletter
carefully, they can collect their ten dollars. |

Rumors Corner: DID YOU KNOW...? |
|
|
- Mosquito repellents don't repel. They hide you. The spray
blocks the mosquito's sensors so they don't know you're there.
- Dentists have recommended that a toothbrush be kept at least
6 feet away from a toilet to avoid airborne particles resulting
from the flush. I keep my toothbrush in the living room now.
- The liquid inside young coconuts can be used as a substitute
for blood plasma.
- No piece of paper can be folded in half more than 7 times.
- Donkeys kill more people annually than plane crashes.
- You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching
television.
- Oak trees do not produce acorns until they are fifty years
of age or older.
- The first product to have a bar code was Wrigley's gum.
- The king of hearts is the only king without a mustache.
- A Boeing 747's wingspan is longer than the Wright brother's
first flight. The wingspan of the B-36, a retired USAF bomber,
was twice as long.
- American Airlines saved $40,000 in 1987 by eliminating 1
olive from each salad served in first class.
- Venus is the only planet that rotates clockwise.
- Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient at waking you up in
the morning.
- The plastic things on the end of shoelaces are called
aglets.
- Most dust particles in your house are made from dead skin.
- The first owner of the Marlboro Company died of lung cancer.
So did the first Marlboro Man.
- Barbie's full first name is Barbara Millicent Roberts.
- Michael Jordan makes more money from Nike annually than all
of the Nike factory workers in Malaysia combined.
- Marilyn Monroe had six toes.
- All U.S. presidents have worn glasses. Some just didn't like
to be seen wearing them in public.
- Walt Disney was afraid of mice.
- Pearls melt in vinegar.
- It is possible to lead a cow upstairs...but not downstairs.
- The reason firehouses have circular stairways is from the
days when engines were pulled by horses. The horses were stabled
on the ground floor and figured out how to walk up straight
staircases.
- And the best for last...Turtles can breathe through their
butts.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.
