What
the world needs now is not love, sweet love, according to Tanya
Hoting Mrazek, but more qualified ASL interpreters. Having
taught the very musical Tanya and her handsome husband, I
thought I would open with a little musical tribute. Tanya
presented a plea for financial support for Camp ASL which is
billed as a “full immersion silent weekend” for beginner,
intermediate, fas 829-7761 Brent Rivers, and advanced
interpreters. She explained the very desperate need in this area
for qualified people who can help the deaf deal with doctors and
lawyers for instance. A classic example is the deaf person who
tested positive for HIV and went home thinking his test was
negative due to a mix-up in the signing process. It was two
years before the error was rectified. The camp is held at
Courage North and means three days of absolute silence for those
participating--talking means heavy fines and floor scrubbing
according to Tanya. The value of this experience is priceless
since there is no good way to acquire a second language without
using it. ASL is the first language of most deaf people and
English is their second language. This means that technology is
helping but it’s not the complete answer since only basic ideas
can be communicated through hand held devices. Tanya left us
with her email address and phone numbers so that if anyone has
need of an interpreter they can contact her at:
tanmrazek@hotmail.com,
820-7655 (cell) and 218-352-6225 (work). |

Dear Brainerd Sertoma Members:
Thank you! Thank you ! Thank you!. We want you to know how much we
value your organization’s friendship and support. We can’t thank
you enough for everything you’ve done for Camp. We’re happy to
share with our groups how much the Sertoma Club, a true Friend of
Camp, has helped us to continue our much needed services to
persons of all ages with developmental disabilities. I know your
Council supports many worthy causes and we are proud to be one. It
is very generous of you to donate $1.000 toward the Life Guard
Fund. The Board of Directors, Staff, myself personally, but more
importantly all who come to Camp thank you again for being there
for us. You have helped us bring joy and smiles to thousands of
Campers each year. Sincerely, Jeff OlsonDear Brainerd Noon

Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |
