Emily
Lanin, Chairperson, again invited Sertomans to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure. This event is being held in Brainerd for the second time to help find a cure for a disease that strikes both men and women. The statistics for women include 182,000 diagnosed cases per year that result in 40,000 deaths. The survival rate for victims increases 90% with early detection and treatment. Some of the $11,300 raised last year (75% of the money raised in these races stays with the local community) was given to help promote early detection and treatment. Nationwide, this group which is independent of the Cancer Society, has raised $300 million which has pumped 47 million into grants for research. The ultimate goal of the race is to find a cure. Seven point three million people take part each year. The video which was shown included some heart-wrenching stories about survivors, victims, the loyalty and dedication of the volunteers, the camaraderie of the race that results in a positive experience, and the general empowering of each person who participates. Emily Lanin, took the opportunity to thank the corporate sponsors from Sertoma who are participating in this event. It is being held July 1st which is a Sunday in conjunction with the Fourth of July events. Races start at 8:30 a.m. at Adamson field and include both a 5 k run-walk and a 1 mile family walk.

Todd Bymark, another new Sertoma was our featured member. He is Director of Sales and Marketing at Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge. He moved to Brainerd 4 years ago with his wife Kathryn and has 3 children, 8yrs.,6 yrs., and 3 months. He was born on
"Da Range" and has an extensive background in the hospitality industry. As Todd said,
"My family absolutely loves living in the Brainerd Lakes Area". Todd is definitely a family man. He listed playing with his children as his number one hobby and his goal for the future was to provide them with the best role model that he possibly could. He also enjoys gardening, and has a workshop. Todd joined Sertoma because it gave him the chance to meet new people and to give something back to the community. His sponsor was Kevin Donnay. Breaking and entering his own hotel room on his honeymoon was his most embarrassing moment. FAS 829-7761 Kim Ellingson

Tom Rosenberger's mystery guest was Father Glen Moe from the mission in Haiti who thanked Sertomans for their participation in the shoe project. The mission encompasses 7 villages and the school includes 1700 children. Plans for the 2 story 40 classroom high school are on Father Glen's agenda as he met with NorSon people before today's meeting. His mission's goal is
"To empower the people to be self sufficient and share with each other" as well as promote spiritual growth. They are fighting zombeism, voodooism and corruption within the church that dates back to Papa Doc's dictatorship to do so. Some interesting facts presented included the system of reward for students. Students who rank in the 90th percentile for a semester get a goat. If they maintain their average all year, it is a pig. The mission works with mothers to start their own in home business and with fathers to start their own farms. Farm products are bought and used to feed the students at the school. Father Glen is proud of his students who have gone on to be professors, lawyers, and nurses. He invited everyone to Louisiana to the golf tournament for the mission and encouraged corporations to donate shirts and hats to the kids.
Thanks for the FAS calls Carmen Green and Tami Webb. Tami collected
her $10, Steve Nobel did not.
