A wry tongue-in-cheek sense of humor was very evident in the speaker at todayıs Sertoma meeting. He began with an exaggeration,
" I had a dream begun in the little town of Baxter about celebrating life in this wonderful part of the country," and then went on to convince us of the truth of living his dream. Philosophically, Lake Country Journal's founder and publisher Chip Borkenhagen was convinced it was possible
"to do what you ideally would like to do". In his case, it was an opportunity to showcase his photography, illustrations and writing in a national level, quality magazine aimed at a 60 mile radius that includes the Brainerd Lakes country. He faced many obstacles, chief of which is the fact that 60% of magazines fail in the first year and by the third year 1/2 more of those who survived are gone. He had to convince skeptical local businessmen that he was a serious customer.
He had to educate local advertisers to the idea that higher costs for magazine ads were worthwhile. Somehow, working with a small staff of 8 supplemented by 30-40 freelance writers and 10-15 different part-time photographers, the Lake Country Journal has survived for five years. In fact, in Chip's words,
"Now we are a success story, we are here to stay, and we have changed the community." This glossy magazine has a readership of 30,000 compared with national magazines which reach an average of 100,000 but their costs are just as great. Ninety percent of LCJ's costs comes from the great group of advertisers which Chip credits with the success of the magazine. The other 10 percent comes from subscriptions and sales. They also supplement their income with outside clients who take advantage of Chip's background in marketing and advertising. Just pick up an issue such as the one Chip brought. You can visit Riverton, find out about wild rice harvesting, learn about home schooling, visit the forest floor and read poems and short stories. A question and answer period followed. Some interesting facts came out of those answers. Critters sell best on the covers. The magazine won the Minnesota Magazine Publishing Best New Magazine of the Year Award. The readers judge the best local restaurants. A very appropriate comment from a Sertoman reinforced Chip's whole speech. He had recently moved here from Bemidji and was extremely impressed with the extent of the local advertising in the magazine. Kudos to Roy Miller for another extremely informative and entertaining success story.

SERTOMA MARIUCCI MEMORIES
"Just go over to Maddens and help these guys out, they are really fun to work with," said my good friend Jeff Olson. Jeff and I go back a long
way-I am the very first person he met when he moved to Brainerd. He had already talked me into dragging my sister and her husband to Camp Confidence to make bread dough. That is where I met my first Sertomans and came to understand what a great group they were. Chuck, Gary, Hopper, Mike, Pooch, and Tom all stick out in my memory. Chopping garlic till our fingers were sore, swamping out the Endres shelter until it was clean enough to cook in, hauling tons of food back and forth from Maddens, looking up to see a famous football player or hockey great waiting for you to put one of the Ehrich's special fried mushrooms on their plate, just missing a tornado by minutes as the last of the buses departed from camp and those of us who were left were stuck until the torrential rain stopped, are just a few of my Maruicci memories. FAS 829-7761 Tami Webb. Jeff allowed me to be an honorary Sertoman so that I could help out and I can definitely say that it was hard work. You went home from Camp that day tired and aching but with a feeling of
accomplishment-how was it possible to feed all of those people with such primitive facilities? All of you new Sertomans are lucky. Things are much easier than they were back in the good old days but that doesn't mean that you are not needed.
"Many hands make light work" certainly applies here and I would encourage you all to come out to Camp Confidence on the 13th and 14th because I guarantee that you too will have Mariucci Memories.
