Our speaker today was Brainerd's current Teacher of the Year, 3rd grade instructor from Baxter Elementary School, Karin Hines. Karin is a native Brainerd citizen who can boast that she has been a part of the school system for almost 50 years when she includes her own experiences through junior college. Karin is a dedicated teacher who started her career at Riverside for 15 years and then has spent 17 more years at Baxter. She decided to accept the nomination for TOY because she felt that her children at home and school could benefit from this opportunity. She felt it gave her an opportunity to make some new goals and reevaluate her philosophy of education. She believes that
"teachers have an opportunity and responsibility to challenge, motivate and inspire children to be prepared to meet their future and that good teachers are the solid foundation of our society, the cornerstone of any other profession." The teacher of the year program does not pick out the
"best" teacher in a school system, but instead picks a teacher that has the outstanding qualities to represent all the good teachers that exist in the district. Karen ended her speech with several amusing student anecdotes and left us with a glimpse into the life of a teacher.

Well, it was beans and weenies day and President Milo Johnson didn't make the deadline, but he was very proud of this group that all earned their steak by bringing in a new member or several as over-achiever Steve Augustinack did. Actually, we are all very proud of our membership which is third largest in the nation and it is people like these Sertomans that made it happen. Good job!!
These people almost had to hang on to the loon in front of Bonanza to keep from being blown away, but this outstanding group managed to brave the elements to have their picture taken.

Thanks to the hard-working social committee for the fun trivia night held at Paul Bunyan Sports Bar and Grill. Thanks to all the sponsors who donated prizes including Lakes Area Printing, Paul Bunyan Sports Bar and Grill, and Lake Region Beverage. Those of you who missed this event missed your chance to be famous. Not only did we get lots of free food but we got to be in the television commercial diving into our table top size pizza and toasting with our giant glasses.compliments to Mike McFarland and his crew for a great time.
