Kathy Stephen, new director of the Crisis Line visited with Sertomans today. Although the group has spoken to us in recent months, she felt it was important to return and ask for help. She explained that she felt Martin Luther King Jr.'s philosophy was important here,
"Everyone can be great because everyone can serve," They need a 60 person base of volunteers to make the Crisis Line work and they are currently at 26. She also said that they were $25,000 under budget. The Chocolate Lovers Extravaganza and United Way are there major funders, but
they are looking for more donations from local civic groups. The important thing to remember is that the Crisis Line provides all the training you need and you can do this from home at your own convenience.
Crisis Line's goal is "empowering people through support and encouragement to deal with their problems on their own". It was founded in 1988 due to the increase in the number of suicides locally and now serves 6 counties. Most of the calls are informational or referrals and there is a crisis team that takes over in emergencies. Kathy laughed when she explained that she had a call from someone this weekend wanting to know how to get rid of a tick!

Sertoman of the Day
Brian Swerine was today's Sertoman of the Day. He moved to Brainerd 3 years ago to take a position with the Boy Scouts. He was born and raised in Minneapolis and likes golf and anything outdoors.
Brian and his wife Lori have 2 boys and girl along with a stepson. He has college degrees from both Augsburg and Hamline. He joined Sertoma in 1998 and his sponsor was Reed Campbell. He received his Gem Award in 1999 and ended his speech with a quote familiar to any Trekkie fan,
"Live long and prosper".

New Members: remember to help with greeting if the assigned members are not available. Pam Sachs and Colleen Smith are looking for 2 more volunteers to take notes at the meetings. Kim needs to start her secretary elect duties. See Pam if interested--remember it would only be once every 4 months. We are also looking for sponsorships and a team captain for our Relay for Life Team--see Milo.
